Free Music Review: Hail, hail!

As sad as it is to hear that Scorpions are finally making plans for a well-deserved retirement, they did make the right choice to go out with an incredible bang for their final studio album. This album contains a mix of styles from their popular 80s albums, touches of Crazy World, and the more modern sound of Unbreakable.
Raised On Rock - Excellent rocker that even starts out with chords very similar to "Rock You Like A Hurricane", and the blatant influence is there with lyrics like "I was born in a hurricane, nothing to lose and everything to gain...". Catchy chorus, great talk-box effects in the background, and a great ending solo that reminds me of a live version of "Hit Between The Eyes". 5/5
Sting In The Tail - A little different fare for Scorpions with a lot of wah in the opening riff, but a great live number with a sing-a-long-chorus. "Bang, bang, rock with the gang..." I can imagine Stone Temple Pilots or Sammy Hagar singing this song. 4/5
Slave Me - A short, but heavy song that reminded me of something from Unbreakable, and with good reason. In a radio interview, Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jabs explained that this song was left over from the Unbreakable sessions. This is also another song with some background talk-box effects. The song is a little short for my tastes, but it is compact and squeezes every little bit of goodness out of 2 minutes and 45 seconds. One of my favorite songs from the album. 5/5
The Good Die Young - I would call this a ballad, but a ballad like No One Like You or Through My Eyes. It starts out with an acoustic piece, then goes into a mid-tempo beat, and has a harder chorus like the aforementioned songs. 5/5
No Limit - Amazing rocker with a heavy beat, similar to the pounding rhythm from Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song". It is very difficult to pick a favorite song from this album, but this ranks very high on the list. This could have also been on the Unbreakable album. 5/5
Rock Zone - A fast-paced rocker. Sounds reminiscent of "You Wanted the Best" by Kiss. Solo section reminds me of the solo section to "Hit Between the Eyes". 4/5
Lorelei - Much better ballad than Styx's song called Lorelei. This is a ballad that would have fit in well on Face the Heat.. This song also has hints of "Send Me An Angel" or "When You Came Into My Life". 5/5
Turn You On - This has a heavy chugging riff that would do Judas Priest proud, with a mix of Kiss' "Psycho Circus". 4/5
Let's Rock (iTunes and LP only) - The opening riff sounds like Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" with a huge set of cajones attached to it. Another great, catchy chorus. This song is not available on the CD, but it is available for download from iTunes and it is on the LP. 5/5
SLY - Still Loving You Part II? Close. The opening riff is very, very close sounding to "When the Smoke Is Going Down". I figured out the riff, and it pretty much contains the same chords. The solo sounds like a "Still Loving You" type solo, though. I believe the song name comes from the reference of the song "Still Loving You". Klaus explained that a number of people mentioned making love to that song in the mid-80s, and someone even named their daughter Sly because of the song. While Scorpions lyrics generally have not derived too far from the topics of love, sex, and rock n' roll, SLY contains some of the most unique lyrics, involving estrangement from one's child. 5/5
Spirit of Rock - This is about the only low point on the album. It is a good song, just not great. If it had been on Pure Instinct, it would have been one of the better songs, however. But compared up against this album, it has a difficult time competing. 3/5
The Best Is Yet To Come - Another amazing ballad, with a fun sing-a-long chorus that I can imagine a bunch of drunk people in a bar singing along to. An ironic twist to end a wonderful album. 5/5
For those who have been pining for Scorpions glory days of the 1980s, THIS is the album to buy. Since buying this album (repeatedly), I have listened through this several hundred times, and it still is fresh, fun, and amazing to my ears. This album currently sits in my top five favorite Scorpions albums, and I imagine its strength will endure for many, many years to come in a post-Scorpions world.

After the release of their next album, STING IN THE TAIL, and a three-year mammoth tour, which will take them across five continents, one of the most successful rock bands in the world, SCORPIONS, will be ending their career. During their 40-year career, SCORPIONS sold over 100 million albums and received many awards, such as the World Music Award and several Echos--the German equivalent to the Grammy. Today they still play sold-out venues around the world. Not long ago, 152,000 South Americans came to 15 SCORPIONS concerts between Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City. Their song "Wind of Change" has become an anthem for the fall of the Iron Curtain. The tour will launch in the band's home country Germany in May.
