Free Music Review: Fresh sound, back to the heavy riffs...
Hit: 5 Stars

The Scorps are back with heavy rockers. This is not just old rock we've heard before, but a fresh blend of new sound with heavy riffs. I have been a fan forever and love everything they do. Believe it or not, perhaps my favorite is what they did with the Berlin Philaharmonic Orchestra, but this new album is just as good, just in a different way.

The disc opens with New Generation, which is powerful and, in my opinion, extremely well-written. I think some of the older Scorpions music has fairly shallow lyrical content, but the songwriting on this album is fantastic, especially in New Generation. This song is a real gem.

Love 'em or Leave 'em, as Klaus describes it on the disc "Extra's," which also make this album great, is "a classic Matthias riff." This song has some heavy kick. Turn it up and find out. It gets in, kicks you around, and ends.

Deep and Dark is another song with great lyrics. Again, it's also heavy, and the way Klaus sings some parts reminds me of stuff from the late 70's.

Borderline is clean, heavy, crunchy guitar. It's more produced as far as the harmony vocals go, and the lyrics aren't fantastic on this track, but the song sticks in your head. I love hearing the extra fretting sounds on this one.

Blood too Hot is a song designed for live shows. I saw it performed live and it was loud and powerful, just as it is on this album. Seriously a rocker, here.

Maybe I Maybe You is among my favorite tracks ever. It sheds the mold of predictability through a surprising progression you'll have to hear. Klaus sings perfectly in his range and one can get a sense through this song that the Scorpions have improved musically over the years. This song has great lyrics and a less-than-typical and familiar progression. I love this one.

Someday is Now is a great track as well. I like the lyrics more than the music, but this song is no drag.

I'm not entirely crazy about My City My Town, but it's still great.

Through My Eyes, like Maybe I Maybe You and New Generation is unbelievably good. This is proof that Scorpions lyrics and music have improved, have tremendous meaning, and move emotions. This song has the most meaning to me, and I think it also represents the best songwriting on the whole album. It is hauntingly beautiful, accurate, powerful, and can only be delivered by Klaus behind the mic.

Can You Feel and This Time are no album fillers and will stay in your head. The vocals are the standouts to me on both songs. Drummers out there will appreciate the fills on This Time.

She Said is a sad ballad. It affects me enough sometimes I skip over the track.

Remember the Good Times has great lyrics.

Overall, this album is fresh, crunchy, and entirely listenable. If you want the same old retread songs you won't get it here. This album is tremendous with respect to quality, clarity, songwriting, lyrics, and overall musicianship. Klaus hasn't lost anything, and in my opinion, sings better than anything other than the acoustic/orchestra stuff. Yes I love the old stuff, I'm just saying I think Klaus' voice has only grown and improved over the years. He still has everything, he just takes care of it better. This album seems to be Scorpions' way of thanking the fans who appreciate the heavy stuff and have been waiting for it for awhile.

On a bit of a side note, I'm also a fan of the band Boston, and I think their new musical direction flat out stinks. I think while bands like Boston lost direction and are sinking the ship, Scorpions, through this album, have patched any rumour of holes in their ship and kicked the engines into gear.

I thought Eye to Eye might be the last Scorpions album, but they keep surprising me. With Unbreakable, they seem to be gearing up for a new decade, which is great for us fans.
