Free Music Review: SIMPLY UNBREAKABLE
Hit: 4 Stars

the last good album they put out was about 10 years ago so when i heard that this cd was as good as "crazy world" i knew i had to get it. the next day i went to the scorpions concert and was blown away by their 3 songs they played "new generation" especially touched me. heres my review of this cd.

1.New Generation- love the rhythem guitar at the beginning, slow but powerful. lyrics are fantastic, they really are. the chorus is very memorable, i find myself singing it all the time. "here comes the young, the new generation, you are the ones, you are the only ones who can make a change" i feel if this song came out on "love at first sting" it would get a whole lot more credit then it is getting now.

2.Love em or Leave em- i love the message of this song "love em or leave em" lol its great. as for the music, pretty good, scorpions clearly have modernized with this one. somewhat catchy chorus and lyrics. all in all, pretty good song.

3.Deep and Dark- hers a good track for klaus to show off his vocals. the best part is easily the chorus, he sounds incredible. only thing that keeps this simple track from being a dud. good sing along song. nice flowing rhythem guitar riffs during the verses.

4.Borderline- I hate the production of this song mainly because Jabbs slides on the strings every time he changes a note and supposed to be something real guitarist try to watch, i know i do. i just cant get into this song, i mean its ok just not something i can listen to over and over again.

5.Blood too Hot- they were going for a hard fast paced rocker on this one, just didnt turn out the best. it reminds me of their song "cant live without you" which is dedicated to their fans just like this one. a good rocker needs memorable rythym and fast paced lead electric guitar, this song really has neither. i usually skip past this song.

6.Maybe I, Maybe You- once again, klaus meine shows off his singing talent with this slow ballad about how he wishes he could change the world. this song is mostly led by piano which sounds good on this cd. i really like the lyrics. only problem i have is that its sort of overly dramatic toward the end. still worth a listen. ive listened to it 50 plus times and hasnt gotten old yet

7. Someday is now- heres another average track. the main reason i dont care of it is because klaus didnt write the lyrics of this song, someone else did. if u dont sing your own lyrics they just dont seem that can come from the heart. the music is good, i like how they put the chorus together. mediocre all together.

8.My city- this song is a lot like their older song "coming home" just a very mediocre form of it. it sounds a lot like the previous track. ok chorus, nothing impressed me in this song at all.

9.Through my eyes- Favorite song on this cd. love the music but the lyrics are what impress me the most. my favorite is the chorus, "if you could see it through my eyes, you know id try to change it all, ive been trying all my life, to stand up everytime i fall, if you could see it through my eyes." its a must listen to.

10.Can you Feel it- mediocre love ballad here, dont care for it at all.

11.This time- its like a clone of the last track, another pointless love track.

12.She said- heres a great track to listen to. the lyrics take awhile to understand but when you do you can see how creative klaus realy is. i love the guitar mix at the beginning, especially the lead guitar. its a love ballad about losing someone. hes very upset about his loss. basically he feels she is telling him he can move on but to never forget about her. very beautiful

13.Remember the Good Times- this is a fun song to listen to becuase its so lively and easy to sing along to . good way to end this album. i listen to this track once a week.

though this cd is only average, it finds a place in my cd player once a week. im just so impressed that after 35 years, scorpions are still at it, after making over a 100 songs previously you just have to be impressed with this cd and that they still have something left. simply unbreakable. KEEP ROCKIN!!!

Free Music Review: A surprising rocker from the Scorpions
Hit: 4 Stars

THE BAND: Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (guitars), Matthias Jabs (guitars, voicebox), Pawel Maciwoda (bass), James Kottak (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (2004) 13 tracks clocking in at approximately 56 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page heavy duty paper booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, several black & white band photos, and thank you's. The disc is enhanced for your PC - featuring 3 short snippets you can click on for a photo gallery, video message from band members, and Scorpions biography. Recorded at Peppermint Park Studios, Hannover, Germany. Label - Sanctuary Records.

COMMENTS: If you've been following the Scorpions since the late 70's as I have, you probably passed at first on "Unbreakable" thinking it was another average (or worse) release. You'd be correct in your thinking that the Scorpions of old were long gone - with good reason... the 1990's were not kind to the band - going from bad to worse with "Face The Heat" (1993), "Pure Instinct" (1996), and the danceable "Eye II Eye" (1999). However, "Unbreakable", with its shiny metallic cover, was a pleasant surprise. A solid return to form for the Scorpions of old. I liken this Scorpions revival to that of Kiss' comeback after the dismal "Unmasked" and "Music From The Elder" and then unleashing the very heavy "Creatures Of The Night" (1982). "Unbreakable" features an ageless Klause Meine on vocals. He still sounds fresh after 30+ years (there's no hint of vocal chord damage/surgery from the early 80's). Schenker and Jabs can still rip it up on guitar. Per the the video message from the enhanced portion of the disc, this was recorded 'live' in the studio with everyone playing together. Some heavy songs here... with a fantastic opening 1-2 punch ("New Generation" and "Love 'Em Or Leave 'Em") that I haven't heard since "Blackout" (the songs "Blackout" and "Can't Live Without You"). Heavy - with melody. "New Genreration" is my absolute favorite song of theirs over the past decade. It tells an uplifting yet dark story of wartime with the leaders looking to the youth for answers... all in George Orwell-esque fashion (it really sets the tone for the entire album). Other rocking highlights include "Blood Too Hot", "Someday Is Now", "Borderline" and "Can You Feel It". The Scorpions tone it down on 3 softer songs with "Through My Eyes", "She Said", and a piano ballad "Maybe I Maybe You" (with the band joining in for a great ending)... all being well-crafted light FM songs destined for heavy use in elevators and dentist's offices. Easily, this is the Scorpions best studio album since "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990). Many of the songs here would fit in nicely with their 80's material. This album blew me away because I was totally NOT expecting it to rock my socks off. A modern classic by some old-school rockers (4.5 stars).

Free Music Review: Refreshing
Hit: 4 Stars

The Scorps are back with a real good, rockin' album. No, they will never make another Black Out or Love At First Sting, but this album is as good as we could expect, especially from a band that is trying to appeal to such a global market. I think that if they were trying to please only the USA fans, some of the songs would have been different. Like the Stones, The Who, etc, the band's best days are behind them; BUT, this new album is closer to what we love about the Scorpions than anything we've heard from them in 14 years.

The album's opening track, "New Generation", leaves no room for doubt that the Scorps can still rock. Immediately, we hear the symbiotic guitar work of Rudolf Schenker's heavy riffing with Matthias Jabs' six-string-sting lead, in what will be a new Scorpions classic. This sets the tone for the rest of the album. Here's my take on the rest of the songs:

"Love `Em of Leave `Em - straight ahead rocker, cool riffs, I bet it'll come off live real good.

"Deep And Dark" - one of the best songs on the album, heavy guitars, killer riffs, great chorus

"Borderline" - mid tempo rocker, good verse sections, really generic chorus, overall not bad

"Blood Too Hot" - Fast rocker, sounds like it was written to play live, still a little generic

"Maybe I, Maybe You" - starts off slow and sappy (with some random guy playing piano) but builds into an amazing triple meter ( a la Hendrix's "Manic Depression") rocking tune! They should have started this song differently but it ends up being another one of the best tracks.

"Someday Is Now" - Good fast rocker, another one that'll be good live

"My City, My Town" - Scorps give props to their hometown, mid tempo rocker

"Through My Eyes" - here's the song we've been waiting 14 years to hear, classic Scorpions chord progression and melody, vintage Klaus Meine harmonies, a little like "No One Like You", the best song on the album IMO

"Can You Feel It" - rock anthem style tune, very generic chorus but totally killer verse sections

"This Time" - mid tempo rocker written by Matthias Jabs, the 2nd best tune on the album IMO, very cool!

"She Said" - one more ballad, good melody and all but enough already!

"Remember the Good Times" - 60's style song structure (but heavy sound), sounds like they wrote in 5 minutes but it's still a fun song

Overall, the album is very good, with all the musicians really executing well. The sound is classic yet modern. The production is very good and the mixing is clear. My only real complaint is that Matthias' solos are mixed too low (listen to Blackout to hear proper lead guitar mixing). Scorpions fans will not be disappointed. The album is a refreshing departure from the Scorpions' musical direction of the past several years, and very refreshing "alternative" to the dull thud of most of the current "rock" bands.

Free Music Review: A Very Good Effort
Hit: 4 Stars

For so many years this band was my favorite band in the world. The last nearly perfect album they made however was Savage Amusement way back in 1988. Subsequent albums had good moments yet overall they dwelled in mediocrity from 1991's Crazy World, 1993's Face The Heat onward, with the exception being the terrific Acoustica released in 2002. The Scorps hit the bottom with the release of the tepid Eye To Eye about four years ago, and it seemed as though they might never release another studio album with new songs.

Unbreakable is a good record. I count 7 very strong songs that could be released as singles. The additional 6 songs are decent but not outstanding. There is no doubt that Klaus Meine still has one of the best and most distinctive voices in the world. Rudolph Schenker is a genius at creating catchy riffs and writing powerful heavy pop songs. The production and mix is very strong for the most part with a huge bassline pumping under everything. However, it seems that after establishing guitar God status with his inventive playing back in 1982 on Blackout, and solidifying that status on 1984's Love At first Sting and Savage Amusement in 1988, Mattias Jabs has all but disappeared. We know he is physically there, but his soloing on virtually everything since 1988 is generic and buried in the mix. Why is that? Where have you gone Mattias?

On to the songs: I find Love 'Em Or Leave 'Em to have elements of parts from Taken By Force from 1978 incorporated into the song. The song is extremely catchy and could be a hit; Deep And Dark is perhaps the best song on the album and is another potential huge hit; Maybe I Maybe You is very stong, starting out mellow and features Klaus before building to a cresendo; Someday Is Now could be another hit and reminded me of Slade's Run Runaway from 1983 with the layers of acoustic guitars under the entire song; Through My Eyes sounds like something from the In Trance/Virgin Killer days back in 1976 and 1977, and it is fabulous; And finally Remember The Good Times is a catchy bonus song that has some clever lyrics and feel good athmosphere.

I rate the CD four stars out of five which is a bit high, but I do so because how many bands these days put out albums with 7 of the 13 tunes being very strong? Not too many. Not to mention how many bands who have been recording as long as the Scorpions have (32 years) still put out high quality material? Not many if any. This is a good album by a band who can pull this stuff off in their sleep. They are legends. This is quality work. I can't wait to see them live.
