Free Music Review: Modern Scorpions...They're Back!
Hit: 4 Stars

What is it with these 50 something rockers. They seem to put out more energized, well thought out, quality music than most of the young punks these days. Alot of the younger bands don't even realize the the "roots" from which their music is derived. I am a big Scorpions fan from the beginning in the 70's, with the Schenker brothers together. They have a had a long, successful career in the "arena rock" industry, and have unfortunately tailored their music to that formula. It is NOT a bad thing, the product is just a little too slick for my tastes. That being said, on with the review....
Klaus Meine has simply an awesome vocal range. I just love listening to his "german tinged" lyrical machinations. The music here is highly energetic, and pumps life into a genre of music surviving by a thread...that unstable bridge between "hard rock," and heavy metal. The songwriting is very simplistic, but carries an extremely positive vibe in it, as most Scorpions songs generally do; subject matters ranging from hard rocking fun to unrequited and/or good lovin'.
One element thankfully missing from this release is the syrupy radio airplay ballad. I personally think the Scorpions are way too good a band to have to put out one of those "Still Loving You" ballads on every album, but far be it from me to step in the way of the money making juggernaut. They have created, here, a great mixture of heavy/light songs that don't experiment or stray in any new direction very far. I LOVED the 1999 release "Eye to Eye," because it showed a different, modernized side to the band out of the mainstream; though I am probably the only fan of that album outside of the diehards.......
The rhythm and lead work by the Schenker/Jabs combination is excellent, bringing back some of the energy from the middle 90's "Face The Heat," and "Pure Instinct" days; and there is a little of that "raw" feel that they gave us during the "Animal Magnetism" days. All in all, "Unbreakable" is a very solid, if not great release from the band. It may not bring in alot of new fans to the fold, but will sure make us longtime Scorpion fans happy they are still creating quality music! I hope it will not be their last!

Free Music Review: Still Stinging After All
Hit: 4 Stars

I have to admit I was hesitant buying this record. I don't want another CD jewel case to collect dust by another once great rock band that has overstayed their welcome. In other words, I don't want a record full of ripped off blues material originally performed 60 years ago because they sold their soul for one last run by dancing with a boy band and have no creativity left or because the band's front man is shot vocally and can't do rock anymore. What I do want is an album by a band that not only once was great but are still great. The Scorpions are that band.

I've read bands from different periods of music history say their new record was "back to what the fans wanted: A classic sounding record" but not delivered once the record was heard. The Scorpions promised this to their fans and truly have delivered. Klaus Meine sounds incredible as does the whole band throughout the record. Opening with a great rock track that takes me back to times where the rock was hard and all was right with the world and filling all tracks in between with more rip roaring metal loveliness, I am truly pleased I picked up this record. It truly is good to hear a band that is a real rock band releasing an album that is a real rock album. There is no attempt to be "cool" and follow the current trends and fads. How about rewarding these guys and playing it on the radio? No, that's reserved to the depressed and those who aren't entirely sure what race they are a member of.

I'm known for my anal retentive reviews that go track by track but what can I really say about a record like this? Every song rocks! Some have stronger hooks than others and not every song is one I will play over and over again but there are a lot of tracks like that. Honestly, if you consider yourself a Scorpions fan or ever have, pick this one up. You'll be happy to hear they have not gone south on metal avenue just yet. Well over 30 years after their debut, the Scorpions are still standing and still rocking harder than anyone. These guys were rocking before I was born and with this record, I'm convinced they'll be rocking after I'm gone. The Scorpions truly are Unbreakable!

Free Music Review: Solid Album
Hit: 4 Stars

Firstly, I want to say that I saw the Scorpions this past summer in Tel-Aviv, Israel and they were rocking like they were 30 years old.
Secondly, the Scorpions are one of the unfortunate bands that, due to their immense success of their 80's hits (Rock You Like a Hurricane in particular), they have been stigmatized and forever viewed as solely an 80's "hair band." Pop culture, I love the 80's, etc. have portrayed them in this light so often that people who don't really know their music will simply dismiss them as an 80's band. Little do most people know that the Scorpions started in 1972!! That's almost a full decade before the 80's. They are far from the the 80's image people attach to them. Few bands can go through 3 and a half decades and evolve with music successfully. Honestly, the only bands that have aged well and evolved musically that I can think of at the moment are Rush and Scorpions. So, in short, I salute them for that incredible feat.
Regarding Unbreakable, it is definitely a solid rocker. It's like most Scorpions albums, where the majority of the songs are highly listenable and only few are mediocre. Also, they usually have a song that follows the most over-used chord progression in the history of music - Am F C G. The only reason I dont completely dismiss these songs as highly unoriginal and frustrating is because the Scorpions had an Am F C G song way back in 1980 with Make It Real. So they're allowed to use that chord progression (although they use it too often and eventually they should realize that every single unoriginal crappy band or pop singer that comes out today uses that "safe" progression. It's so pathetic already.)
The highlights for me are Unbreakable, Through My Eyes, and Deep and Dark.
Although the Scorpions definitely have better, more uniform albums, such as Crazy World, Eye II Eye, Face The Heat, Lovedrive, Savage Amusement, Pure Instinct, etc., Unbreakable is a solid good album and I'm happy to see they haven't thrown their hats in just yet.

Free Music Review: Good Rock N Roll Album.
Hit: 4 Stars

First of all, I cannot understand how some people put this album down and give it terrible reviews. For those of you that keep comparing this album the Animal Mag and Blackout days, you need to stop living in the past. Times change and so does music. There will never be another Blackout album, so if that's the only album you like then go listen to that album. The fact that these guys are still around making music is amazing. They have truly evolved since their first album in 1972. There are only a handful of bands that have that kind experience under their belt.
With that being said, Unbreakable is a great effort by the guys. Yes, it's no Blackout. But then again it shouldn't be. The band has done a great job of making a modern album with their unique and classic style. There are hints of their classic albums here. Love 'em or Leave 'em has a certain Taken By Force feel to it. Blood Too Hot and Through My Eyes sound like something out of Blackout. Can You Feel It is very reminecent of The Zoo. I will agree with some of you that the solos are kind of weak and short. That is perhaps the only negative here and why I don't give it 5 stars. It feels as if Matthias was holding back for some reason. If he would've let go and done some extra work, this album would've been a true masterpiece. After doing some "experiments" like the much critized Moment Of Glory and Acoustica albums, the guys decided to go back to their homemade brand of rock n roll. 2 guitars, base, drums, and the unmatched voice of Klaus Meine make this album a great rocker. Let's face it. The glory days of the 80's are gone. But the Scorpions are rock legends and I'll listen to them anyday instead of those weak punk rockers wannabe bands that flood the media nowadays. Pick up this album and listen to it with a fresh perspective. You wont regret it!

Free Music Review: Not the Same Scorps, but Better Than Recent Stuff
Hit: 4 Stars

If you're used to Scorpions albums such as Blackout or Love at First Sting, then you might be a little disappointed by this. For one thing, Hermann Rarebell (drums) and Francis Bucholz (bass) are no longer in the lineup, which changes the sound a little. On the other hand, if you're used to albums like Pure Instinct or Humanity Hour 1, then this album will be a very pleasant surprise.

This album rocks. It's not the standard Scorpions sound you're used to from the 80's, but it actually rocks - plenty of songs on here to crank up.

"Maybe I Maybe You", "She Said", and "Through My Eyes" are the mellow ones on the album, the last being the only one that I like... but the rest of the album kicks butt. The Scorpions are back.

It rocks. "New Generation" almost seems like a commentary on the shifting fans, but it rocks along nicely, as do songs like "Deep and Dark", "Someday Is Now", and "My City My Town". It may not be the classic Scorpions sound (from the 80's) that you're used to, but the Scorpions are back. Definitely add this one to your collection (after you've gotten all of the better ones).
