Free Music Review: Captivating
Hit: 5 Stars

What a lovely, lovely recording. Scott Dunbar goes, or is brought, into a studio and just has a hell of a time. He plays the blues with a kind of frenetic joy. He loves the songs and he loves to play. Highly recommended little gem of a record.

Free Music Review: Strange & Beautiful Delta Blues
Hit: 5 Stars

Scott Dunbar is a little known Mississippi delta bluesman (this being his only recording). He was born 1904 to an ex-slave & is self-taught & illiterate (talk abt credentials!). He plays a barely tuned beatup acoustic guitar, sings in a strong voice that breaks into falsetto for bars at a time & stomps his foot. The overall effect is one of overwhelming exuberance - & joy! He sings blues not cos he's blue but because the blues are an ideal vehicle for his joie de vivre (some of the tracks seem to disintegrate into laughter). Nothing brooding or dark here - no self-pity or anger - just an enlightening humanity which makes you want to put the disc on again & again. He lacks the introspective wisdom of Mississippi John Hurt but makes up for it in pure energy. He died in 1994. This recording was made 1970. Many thanks to fatpossum for making it available.

When I was about 12 yrs. old in the mid 60's my family owned a fishing camp at Lake Mary. We would all go to the camp and at night Scott (actually he was called "Scotty") would come and play the blues for us. There would be about 30 people and the adults would drink beer while Scotty pounded out the blues. I remember that he would stomp his foot on the wood floor so hard that his bottle of Falstaff beer would move around the floor in concentric circles. After each song he would take a few big gulps, move the beer to its original place and go to the next tune. The kids and adults would all dance late into the night. This was my first experience with live blues and I have maintained my affection to this day. This CD is the real blues! It is just as pure as it was then. My, the memories it brings back...
