Free Music Notes for Best: 1991-2004Free Music Review: Wonderful collection but leaves a lot to be desired. Hit: 5 Stars
This first hits CD from Seal is a very good collection with 12 singles from his first four albums of his career plus a newly recorded track called "Walk On By".
In 1990, then-unknown artist Seal released a singled called "Killer" redone by Adamski and the song made a big dent on the charts and would plant the seeds of a majorly successful career. 1991 brought one of the greatest dance pop albums of all time with his first self-titled debut album which yielded the powerful chart-topping single "Crazy" which to this day remains his best song of all time, at least my favorite song of his. The album overall is outright unique with it's mix of energetic blend of dance pop, soul, rock and having a grey atmospheric mood.
His 1994 second self-titled album is probably one of the best sophomore efferts of all time and one of the greatest albums of the 1990s. Amidst the grunge that was all over the place at the time, "Seal 1994" stood out with the spiritually touching song "Prayer Fro The Dying" which is without a doubt a near heart-breaking yet uplifting song at the same time with a somber mood yet high energetic beat and deep atmospherics. It was also on here that he yielded his biggest chart topping hit "Kiss From A Rose" based on the success of the 1995 film "Batman Forever". Other standouts include "If I Could" and "Bring It On".
A four year break would occur afterwards but not without at least one more single called "Fly Like An Eagle" from the Space Jam soundtrack which is an incredible cover version of the Steve Miller classic. I love the original version but the cover version does it a lot of justice! Fabulous job Seal!
In the fall of 1998 came his third outing "Human Being", and his first album to not be self-titled. The album had a far darker, more introspective tone to it. The music overall is much more subtle, moodier and a far cry from the energy of the two preceeding albums before then. The only song from here on this "Best 1991-2004" collection is "Human Being" which was the only single from what I'm aware of that got airplay on VH-1. The album sadly fared poorly and sold poorly which is a shame because it is a great album even though it took a long time to get into.
A five-year gap would occur in which he lay low for a while in which he scrapped an entire album's worth of material, but would really bounce back with his fourth album and his third self-titled album 2003's "Seal IV" and it is a great album overall even though that also took some time to get into. It is kind of a return to the styles of his first two albums but having a different sound altogether with less atmospherics and more funk in it's style. Three tracks are lifted off from here. "Love's Divine", "Waiting For You", and "My Vision". This is a wonderful album and was worth the long wait.
Overall, this "Best 1991-2004" collection is a very good CD but with just 13 tracks, it leaves so much to be desired. The deluxe edition of this collection is a much better buy. Musically "Best" is wonderful but it leaves a lot to be desired. Not to say leave it alone necessarily but his regular studio albums are a far better buy even if it means spending thousands of more pennies.
Best: 1991-2004 PosterMultiplatinum selling, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed Seal unveils his first greatest hits collection with Seal Best 1991-2004. But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). For fans of the pop, dance, urban and adult contemporary, Seal Best 1991-2004 is the quintessential Seal experience. It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La Gorce
