Free Music Review: Detractors Unfair!

Listen, is this the BEST Sebadoh album? Not for real Freed Weed or III fans - but then again, a lot of people find those albums creepy and downright unlistenable. (not me, but I'm just sayin')

To ask artists to stay in any one space is not allowing them to be true to themselves - especially when people have left (Gaffney). Was Lou selling out? He was thinking about selling MORE, to be sure. But like The Replacements with Pleased to Meet Me, he was selling out his way, and what came out was very interesting indeed. Skull isn't quite September Gurls, but it's a great alterna-pop song, and songs like License to Confuse and Magnet's Coil are also very, very good. And despite a few duds (I think there are a few on all Sebadoh's albums), this disc is generally pretty darn good thoughout.

Overall, I do prefer Freed Weed as a purer artistic statement, but I'm not throwing that disc on when I wanna rock (#1 when I want to sit alone in a dark room with some Scotch, though). I for one am pleased with the fact that Lou and co. mixed it up - a lot of bands have 6 albums where the last 3 sound like they're trying too hard to be the first three, not so here.

It was only a matter of time before the return of the sensitive singer-songwriter. However, the 1990s style requires that the introspection be broken up with a little tomfoolery. Sebadoh are masters of the game. Lou Barlow is the inquisitive and earnest leader who delivers the heartfelt "Not a Friend" and "Together or Alone" with all the hurt and pain he can fit on his sleeve. Jason Loewenstein is the guy with the captivating guitar line. Put together, they're something like Donny and Marie--one is a little bit sensitive, the other a little bit rock 'n' noise. And just to prove they're a democracy, they give drummer Bob Fay some with his lone composition, the surprisingly tuneful "Temptation Tide." --Rob O'Connor
