Free Music Review: The Top Speed Metal Album of 1989
Hit: 5 Stars

There are many thrash albums that are considered by many to be classics that came out in 1989, but none beats out Sepultura's Beneath the Remains. This album was the first Sepultura album I got, and it is one of their absolute best. After a brief gentle guitar piece, the title song blasts out of the gate with it's unbeleivable speed and ferocity. This is arguably the best song on the album, if not the best Sepultura song ever. It segues into "Inner Self", one of Sepultura's more popular songs from their thrashier era. While it's not as fast as "Beneath the Remains", it is excellent and is one of the first Sepultura songs about being against the world and believing in yourself, a theme the band would revisit a lot on future albums, especially on Roots. This song also has a great guitar solo by Andreas Kisser, perhaps the most criminally underrated speed metal guitarist. Afterwards, "Stronger Than Hate" is up, which lyrically seems like a sequel to "Inner Self". "Mass Hypnosis" is another one of the songs the band plays in concert more often. It is extremely fast and has a cool, slower melodic guitar solo midway through the song. "Sarcastic Existence" is slightly more generic than the first four songs, but is far from bad. "Slaves of Pain", on the other hand, is a highly underrated Sepultura song, with a surprisingly memorable more-melodic-than-usual-riff. "Lobotomy", "Hungry", and the blazing "Primitive Future" are all, like "Sarcastic Existence", not skip-worthy, but just a bit under par and less memorable when compared with the other songs. Still, the album as a whole is awesome.

Opinion on the best/favorite Sepultura album and the point where the band "sold-out" is one of the most divided opinions in metal in my opinion. Some people think the band's last good album was ROOTS, since lead singer/rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera left after that album. Some people think it's Chaos A.D., since ROOTS lacks much of the speed of the past and is more riff and aggression-oriented, and sounds a bit more like nu metal. Some think everything after Arise is lame, since that was probably their last true speed metal album. There are also probably a few who don't even like that album too much, and prefer the earlier, rawer stuff. That said, many don't like the band's first album, Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation, since the production on that one is crap, is much less technical, and more death metal-ish (I don't really consider Sepultura "death metal", even though they often labeled as such), and perhaps Schizophrenia and maybe even this album is disliked. Personally, I own and enjoy all four of the band's most popular albums: BENEATH THE REMAINS, ARISE, CHAOS A.D., and my current favorite, ROOTS. I am also considering getting SCHIZOPHRENIA. To those who prefer speed metal and enjoy bands like Metallica, Slayer, Dark Angel, and Kreator, among others, I would recommend this and ARISE. If you like Pantera a lot, I suggest CHAOS A.D., as it's more groove metal-ish. For those who like nu metal, I highly recommend ROOTS; even though I don't like nu metal, that album has hints of it. But BENEATH THE REMAINS is still a definite speed metal classic. It shows Sepultura evolving from a primitive speed/death metal band into arguably the best band that isn't part of the "big four." While the band still had some growth to go through (the production is better on future albums, they still didn't speak English very well, Max Cavalera's vocals aren't as growly as they would become, and his brother Igor Cavalera would become an even better drummer as time went on), you must keep in mind that they were between 18 and 19 when they did this one, making this all the more amazing. BENEATH THE REMAINS is a classic and an essential release to speed metal fans.
