Free Music Notes for Rachmaninoff Plays Rachmaninoff: Zenph Re-performance

Free Music Review: a treat for the ears and heart!
Hit: 5 Stars

happy to have zenph 'revive' these recordings and music. Three cheers for engineers! each zenph product gets better - music mavens should get them all. :)

Free Music Review: Audiophile husband
Hit: 5 Stars

My audiophile husband greatly enjoyed this CD for his birthday. I liked it as well.

Free Music Review: Worthy CD for the collection
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a very well done recording. Too often, CD sound is overly compressed but the dynamic range of this is wonderful. I tend to increase the volume when playing this CD since the overall average volume is lower - this really enhances the enjoyment and emotional power of the music.

I know people may have trouble with the Zenph concept, but I find the concept intriguing and the execution on this CD is very well done. Until there is time travel, this is a real treat.

Be aware that there are 13 tracks on this CD: 1 - 13 are recorded in standard stereo and then repeated as 14 - 26 in binaural stereo for headphones. I would rather have thius split into 2 separate discs but that is a nit.

Free Music Review: 3 for the CD because its not SACD; I'll wait hopefully for an import SACD.
Hit: 3 Stars

NOTE: A high definition surround sound download of this album is now available at [...], but I would still like to see an SACD, DVD-A, or Blu-ray disc of it.

I have some Rachmaninoff on 78 and all of it that was released on LP (although not every different LP version), the first release on CD of the complete recordings, plus several other CDs which release some other Rachmaninoff recordings not included in the "complete" sets (alternate takes of the Beethoven "Spring" sonata and the 1929 2nd concerto pre-war and post-war released takes, for example). And I have several versions of the piano rolls, including the complete on Telarc. I also have some bootlegs which released stuff not officially released, at the time, on LP or 78, and may possibly include material not released anywhere else; there are, for example, two different completed takes of the Chopin Ballad, and possibly the Scherzo, and I don't know if my bootleg release from the 1960's is the same pair of takes as the LP or CD release; I have heard, many years ago, both but don't have copies of both Ballad takes (and Scherzo?) and the bootleg doesn't specify the take. And there are 3 takes of each of the Edison releases: I have no Edison 78s and not all takes have been released on the "complete" editions. The Veritas edition doesn't specify takes, but some takes definitely have not been released commercially on LP or CD. I don't have this Zenph reperformance CD, yet. I don't plan to buy the CD. If an import SACD or a Blu-Ray disc, doesn't come out in the next year or so, I probably will buy the CD, but I'm in no rush. I do have the two previous Zenph releases on SACD and recommend them.

Free Music Review: Good music, but a colossal rip-off.
Hit: 3 Stars

The work Zenph does with old recordings is amazing, and this disc is no exception. But the decision of the record company to issue it as a CD rather than an SACD makes it poor value.

Previoius Zenph releases have been on hybrid SACD, which allows the listener to have a full program of music and still enjoy the binaural mix using headphones. By releasing this as a single-layer CD, the program is duplicated: once for the stereo, once for the binaural, on a single layer which contains roughly 79 minutes of data. That means only approximately 39 1/2 minutes of material. In this day and age, that is inexcusable. The playing is excellent, but there is simply not enough of it.
