Free Music Review: Great Samba for Non-Jazz Audiences

First of all, this is NOT a Jazz Samba album. Music industry has historically and wrongly labeled Samba and all Brazil music as JAZZ. However, this categorization is only true for Jazzy Bossa Nova. Example: listen to Joćo Gilberto and you will hear Bossa Nova but not necessarily Jazz. Sergio Mendes is an interesting case of an artist who plays easily on both languages - samba and jazz samba.
"Look Around" was a smash hit from the 60s but, most of all, it is excellent music without being jazz. You'll hear samba even listening to typical American material like Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" or the Beatles "With A Little Help from My Friends". Incredibly agreeable!
This album also features the sensuous vocals by Kate Hansen on the wonderfully beautiful lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman for "So Many Stars", a Mendes original composition.
Just a topic for a healthy discussion: label Verve would only deserve a Grammy vote from me when having issued at least many more Bossa Nova and Jazz Samba material the company insists on keeping on the shelf.
