Celtic music has had its tides of popularity,from Enya,Riverdance&Michael Flatley in the '90s to the present-day blandness of Celtic Woman. Irish music isn't as faddish as it once was, but "Seriously Good Music" tries to be hip with this compilation of music from the Emerald Isle. It tries to make Celtic music sexy with the woman on the cover wearing only a brilliant red sash.
"Seriously Good Music:Celtic" is a mixed bag of traditional and contemporary music. There's "Le Petit Cordonier" which would sound more fitting on a French compilation. "Are you tired, my darling?" and the piece from David Wilkie and Cowboy Celtic sound like country radio. There's the pseudo-eroticism of Shooglenifty's "Delighted"-complete with heavy breathing. Karen Matheson's "Ae fond kiss" is sappy,Hallmark Irish music. The few highlights are Lunasa and Deanta's haunting "As Raibh Tu Ag An Carraig." The frequently represented Frigg is more generic traditional Irish music.
"Seriously Good Music:Celtic" has notable omissions: the Chieftains, Clannad, Enya, and Bill Whelan. It's as Irish as green beer on St.Patrick's Day. Well,more like flat green beer.
