Free Music Notes for Seussical [2000 Original Broadway Cast] AlbumFree Music Review: not that great Hit: 2 Stars
Up front warning: I am reviewing the CD without having ever seen the stage show. I am concerned with the listening experience of the CD, not the quality of the show itself.
All right, that said, I have to say that the music on this CD grew on me. Suffice it to say that my initial reaction to this musical was *very* unfavorable (I won't quote what I actually said about it).
But despite barely getting through it on my first listen, I went ahead and gave it a second try, and I will say I liked it better the second time. I still hardly consider the music here anything to get excited about, but I could see it being a fun show, even if it is a bit too much fluff for its own good (as an aside, it does concern me that many people say the music is better than the show itself, since the music is only so-so). To be sure, it's got its good musical moments, but it also relies *very* heavily on repetition without any kind of significant layering to make the resurfacing of old themes interesting.
Perhaps I'm a bit burned out by all the Disney movies over the years about dreamers who save the day, but one of the big things that struck me about this CD was how tired its story really is. Rather than sympathizing with JoJo and Horton and liking them, I instead found myself thinking what a pathetic doormat Horton is.
Oddly enough, this musical does seem to want to deal with some more adult themes, such as "cosmetic enhancement" and a mother who wants to abandon her child and go off having a good time, and it does a reasonable job of balancing those things with its more silly moments, but I think it could have gone further without tipping the balance too far.
As it is, it has the musical cheesiness of Avenue Q without any of that show's edge. Unfortunately for Seussical, the edge is the only reason that Avenue Q could get away with that kind of music.
Obviously, the other reviews here are overwhelmingly positive, so it may just be a simple matter of taste (I prefer darker musicals to the more fluffy ones), but I can't really recommend this one.
