Free Music Review: One of the best

"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" is probably the best of the made-for-movies musicals. Not only is the adaptation of the original story superb; Johnny Mercer and Gene DePaul have created an exceptional score, both in the songs sung, and in the accompaniment music for the barnraising and the abduction scenes. There is a great variety, ranging from the rollicking "Sobbin' Women" to the nostalgic "When You're in Love." We have watched the movie over and over, from the time we first saw it in the theater, through television screenings, and now with a dvd.
My only fault with the recording in Jane Powell's vibrato (my voice teacher called it a wobble); but that is not serious enough to lower the five star rating.
While other Amazon reviewers have commented favorably about the "bonus tracks," I find them superfluous, not only on this recording but also on all the others I have heard. The only bonus track I have found of value is the "Annie Get Your Gun" overture, which was not included on the original cast recording. Again, not worth lowering the rating; I don't have to listen to them.
