Free Music Notes for Heaven Is Gone

Free Music Review: Very solid and impressive!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a fan of Type O Negative. I don't think that should really matter, though, because these songs were not composed (or decomposed) by Peter Steele. That's his band, his riffs, his words. This is Kenny's band through and through. All those years of playing has to lead to some good writing, and this leads us to Seventh Void.

Now, I am a fan of Soundgarden. I mention this because there are some definite similarities between 7V and Soundgarden. Kenny's voice is similar to Chris Cornell's. A reviewer from above rated the album a 2 mostly because of Kenny's voice being a Cornell "ripoff". This is unfair. What's he supposed to do? Change his voice? Or was Vinnie Paul supposed to tell Kenny that he shouldn't be the lead vocalist of 7V because he sounds too much like Cornell? Is that what they told David Coverdale re: Robert Plant? Kenny's voice matches the music perfectly. With that said, Chris Cornell's voice fits Soundgarden's music perfectly. But remember listening to Audioslave? Good music, but the vocals got annoying after track #3. This is not the case with Seventh Void. Kenny isn't trying to outdo the rest of the band with his vocals a la Chris Cornell.

The tracks are solid all the way through. It's definitely a plug in your guitar and start jamming type of album. I'm not going to deny the influences either. Sabbath. Soundgarden. Chains. Even a little Led Zepp. The riffs jam like The Sword, but with superior vocalism (I do like The Sword, but some singing is nice too). Kenny Hickey's guitar playing is very recognizable. In Type O Negative, soloing is few-and-far-between. But when he did do a solo he pretty much shredded through it. His leads carry many of their songs. If you listen closely, he's not playing power chords all the way through. In fact, it's very technical (except on Slow, Deep and Hard). In 7V, his lead carries EVERY song and he finally gets to let out some of the long repressed feelings he seems to have held in for the last 20 years in Type O Negative (guitar-wise, that is).

I do have one problem, and I'm not usually one to pick on this. It is the labeling of the band as Doom Metal. For me, usually metal is metal. Hard rock is hard rock. Then you have the extremists who have to seperate black metal, death metal, sludge, doom, hard-core, stoner metal, etc. It's stupid. But Seventh Void is not doom metal. I think doom metal, I think My Dying Bride. There is no other band that expresses the term "doom metal" like MDB. Now, when you list all of 7V's influences, are any of those doom metal? No, and the music sounds nothing like that. In fact, 7V would have been more popular 15 years ago during the grunge heyday. This music isn't grunge, but it's influenced by them. One last bit of information: I've met Kenny Hickey 3x. My favorite was in a music store back in 2004. We talked for awhile and on his way out, he had some concert DVD's he was buying. I was quite surprised to see he had 2 Rage Against The Machine DVDs and a Soundgarden DVD. He said, and I quote, "I Love Rage". So, there you have it. No doom metal. But, METAL. Through and through.

Suggestion: listen to the title track. If you like that song, you'll like the whole album. My guess is that if you've read this review all the way through, you'll like Heaven Is Gone. BTW, my favorite band is Opeth.
