I was sitting with a friend the other day and we were talking about albums. He brought up Revolver and, yeah, it was good for it's time. But it wasn't until Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band that the Beatles began recording a series of albums that will remain a timeless entourage of genius hits. In fact, it was the first album of it's kind. They not only achieved technical breakthroughs in how it was recorded, but the album was a concept approach to rock'n roll or should I say rock because with Sgt. Pepper that's what they started. Little Richard and Elvis initiated rock'n roll, Bob Dylan innovated folk into mainstream society, and the Beatles incorporated the British invasion with their swingin' new sound until they captured something we take for granted today...a sophisticated approach to a style of music that not only makes you tap your feet uncontrollably it makes you reflect and think. Don't get me wrong, love songs and party favorites will always be important in the world of rock but to tell stories and write poetry is what makes rock especially fresh and important. The title track sets everything up as the Beatles give themselves a new identity from which to speak to their listeners. With a Little Help from My Friends, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Getting Better...Lovely Rita, When I'm Sixty Four, A Day in the Life...you get the idea. And those are just the classics you'll hear forever on FM radio. She's Leaving Home, For the Benefit of Mr. Kite, and the other brilliant tunes remind the buyer that he or she has purchased something special. Even the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton were able to recreate a fantastic film version something else the Beatles managed to do well with their music (unlike Elvis who should have stayed away from that to remain relevant and possibly more creative, Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees probably should have stayed together after the Sgt. Pepper movie). But I digress. The simple fact is if you don't have Sgt. Pepper in your rock collection...you don't have a rock collection. Buy it.
