Free Music Notes for Fijacion Oral vol. 1Free Music Review: Miss Shakira sets the bar pretty high with this one... Hit: 5 Stars
The world famous Shakira did the right thing when she decided to release an album solely consisting of songs delivered in Spanish. This a treat the she has given to us latins (i'm from Portugal)not only because of the language, but also because of her voice that somewhat sounds better on her native tongue, but due also to the overall quality of this record.I'll do a track-by-track to justify its greatness.
1-En Tus Pupilas- A great track that starts with a french opening that fools you to believe that this song won't be any good.Wrong.This has one of the best choruses of the whole album, and it is one of its catchiest tunes. In it Shaki delivers a well-constructed but low-key song.A must-hear.10/10
2-La Pared- To start it off,I must say I fell in love with this track from the moment I first heard it on Shakira's website. It has a fenomenal crescendo, and the chorus and the overall song are some of the best pieces of music Miss De La Rua has done. Emotional and pleasing, this track could be a huge hit around the world if she decides to release it.Totally amazing and first contester for best of this album 10/10
3-La Tortura- An altogether good track with Mr.Sanz vocals that really upgraded it and made it a hit amongst all spanish speaking countries in the world.I still like it,but it has lost some of this former appeal, just like "Whenever,Wherever" from the previous record. In spite of that, I find it really good, because this was the song that made me buy "Fijacion Oral" in the first place.By anyone's standards, this is not one of the best on this album.8/10
4-Obtener un Sí- This is the track in this, that I like the least and one that I end up skipping because I don't really fond of Bossanova rhythms and songs.Nonetheless, it is a song that her fans will approve , because it's not very bad.I just don't like it and I believe this is out of place in here. 7/10
5-Dia Especial-A lovely track, in which Shaki asks for her lover to forgive her and come back to her.It is one of the best constructed tracks in here ,kinda similar to "En Tus Pupilas".What brings this song to an higher level is the guitar(or synth,I don't know)solo right after the second chorus.A fantastic song, but one that takes longer time to fully appreciate than some of the others 9/10
6-Escondite Ingles- This track has many people talking about it,obviously because of its hard rock nature, doesn't quite fit within the rest of the album.I absolutely adore it,because of its rhythm and beat, quite good for dancing and shouting. What lets this track down are its lyrics that are mainly about how shakira likes to play hide and seek, which is an understament to a certain thing some of us like do at night and with the lights off...Kinda filthy...and that's what I love about it 10/10
7-No- A don't come back-I'm really hurt by you type of song. One of the most introspective songs in the outing and one with the best lyrics. This the slowest track on the whole album but Gustavo Cerati's vocals and Shaki's innate pain comes through making this another one of the best.I understand why Shakira chose it for second single, but there are better choices.I guess every artist has to release a ballad sometimes...9/10
8-Las De La Intuicion- Here comes the most commercial track and obviously made to be a single. But this is not at all a bad thing. This tune is one of the most instantanealy likable in the recording .With its disco-latin beats and whispered vocals ,it could go straight to all summer parties out there. Not very good musically nor lyrically but who cares?? 10/10
9-Dia de Enero- Tied with "La Pared", this is the best on the album because of everything. Its amazing hooks and melodies.Shakira's candid yet sexy deliver of the song, especially on the part she says she will cure your wounds and do much more to you.(I wish she would sing it to me in private). When I listen to it ,it always reminds me of youthfullness and being young.I absolutely can't live without this song and if I had the chance of picking just one song off this album, this would be it. 100/10
10-Lo Imprescindible- A very underrated track among critics and fans alike.I do not at all believe it is that bad but I do agree this is probably the weirdest sounding song Miss De La Rua has done. The bennining of it is a tad scaring, but the chorus is again one of the best on the album and reminds me of my favourite track off the "Ladrones" album, which was "Inevitable". A very good track, just not single material.10/10
I must say I won't review the bonus tracks, because I don't agree with them being on the album, due to the fact that they are not needed.I presume they were imposed by Shaki's record label to fill up the record...
So here it is,my quite lenghty review of Fijacion Oral, which is undoubtdly the best Pop record released in 2005.Won't be considered like it deserves to be,because it is sung in Spanish.Like I quoted earlier,Shakira sets the bar really high with this record and if the next one in English is just as good as this,I will be more than satisfied and forced to say that she could be the new Madonna.More than anyone else, she has the talent for it.

And it's been a long time coming. Shakira's English crossover opus, Laundry Service, was released in 2001. The Spanish Donde Estan Los Ladrones came three years before that. Fijacion Oral, Volumen 1 is the first of two new discs; an English counterpart is due in November. Shakira's bleating, biting voice is in fine form, and it gives the material an electric urgency. She's girlish and innocent during the glittering "Dia de Enero" and sensual and seductive amid the thundering beats of "Lo Imprescindible." A talented stable of producers, including former Soda Stereo vocalist Gustavo Cerati, has swathed Shakira in rhythm-based arrangements. But the album's best moments come when Shakira channels her inner--and innate--rock goddess. "La Tortura" is a hurts-so-good break-up duet with Alejandro Sanz, and "Escondite Ingles" rides a beach-party guitar groove. --Joey Guerra
