Free Music Review: Overall, Shakira rocks
Hit: 4 Stars

Shakira puts an excellent performance in her Tour of the Mongoose. I loved the whole concert! She goes over the top to show off her talent, whether it's bellydancing, playing the drums or guitar, or just singing her songs (actually singing them, not lip-synching). I LOVE her performance of Ojos Asi; it's my favorite part of the whole concert. I also love the beginning of Whenever, Wherever. The cat sequence to Estoy Aqui is cute. I just wish that we could see the ENTIRE concert from beginning to end, no cuts, no exceptions. The two tracks that weren't included in the DVD are Un Poco De Amor and her rendition of Dude Looks Like a Lady. Also I noticed that she put the original Afro drum studio recording to dance to Objection, Tango; not the real thing. I also think that the music CD is redundant. And there are small differences between the CD and DVD. For example, you hear her greet the audience in their language on the CD, but not on the DVD. I wish stuff like that was uncut.
As for the documentary, I liked it very much. You discover that aside from being a superstar, Shakira is pretty much grounded like any other person, and she has fears and dreams like any one of us. I respect her for being traditional. I love the Mariachi band singing for her on Valentine's Day; Antonio is so romantic! And she did the right thing by singing in Argentina, despite the hardships she had to deal with there. I also admire her relationship with her parents, bandmembers and crew.
I can go on and on in this review. To sum up, this is a must have for any Shakira fan. Although the concert is cut in some parts, it is definately a masterpiece.

Free Music Review: Shakira takes it to the (arena-sized) stage!
Hit: 4 Stars

Shakira's 1999 MTV UNPLUGGED DVD showed her to be an impressive live performing artist. Captured in an intimate stage setting where the music was the focus, Shakira delivered an inspired performance. I was concerned that the subtleties of her music would get lost in an arena/stadium setting, but after viewing LIVE & OFF THE RECORD, i.m.o. Shakira for the most part makes a successful transition to the super-sized setting, putting on a show both musically and visually without resorting to the overwrought excesses of many of her peers.

The tunes performed include both Spanish and English favorites, including key tracks from her last album ("Whenever, Wherever," etc.). There is musical diversity, from arena rock ("Back In Black") to the more subtle world music elements in "Ojos Asi" and even touches of electronica on "Ready For The Good Times." The surround sound is very good, with Shakira's vocals coming through loud and clear, and with the audience at just the right level (not too close up, not too far away).

A 55-minute documentary is among the bonus features. Usually I find these extras to be worth one viewing at best, but this portrait of the artist has a depth and level of insight -- in no small part due to Shakira herself -- that I'm certain will lead to a rerun in my DVD player before long. The CD seems redundant to me (essential only if you don't have a DVD player). Overall, LIVE & OFF THE RECORD is an excellent bargain. Hopefully, Shakira's next studio album will head into fresh areas while retaining the emotive power and conviction seen on this DVD.

Free Music Review: Terrific concert
Hit: 4 Stars

& please, if you're going to bash an artist, speak ENGLISH. Anyway, back to the review. There's a 50 minute documentary explaining Shakira's life. My only problem, half of it is in Spanish, so you don't speak Spanish, then you are out of luck. The performance, again, half in Spanish, but who really cares, as long as it sounds good, I like it!! & what do you expect? She is a latina girl after all. She has a cool drum solo, with another drummer, she is actually pretty good, I was quite impressed. She also plays guitar on Inevitable, one of my favourite Spanish songs, if not my favourite. There is also an English version of the song, you can find off the internet(ex. Kazaa is where I got mine). & as for the cd, she just threw in 10 songs from the performance, it's actually quite fun to listen to. My favourite performance is Poem to a Horse, sounds awesome live. The Special Features suck though, there's nothing but an web address.

Ok, if you're going to compare her to anyone, please don't make it to Britney. Britney lip synchs all the time, Shakira never does, their music is no where near the same, so please, it only works if they have some sort of relation music wise. Maybe Michelle Branch, or Sheryl Crow, or Jennifer Lopez. Anyway, this is a good dvd/cd, a must for any Shakira fans!! Also, she's working on her new album, so expect that to come out soon, late this year probably, or next year.

Free Music Review: Excellent Concert DVD, OK Concert CD
Hit: 4 Stars

Live DVD/CD combos are one of the best recent ideas out of the music industry. Like virtually every great rock act, Shakira's live performances have an extra quality that's missing in her studio CDs yet that extra specialness doesn't always translate onto audio. Watching the DVD, on the other hand, helps to recapture the excitement of what looks like a successful and dynamic world tour. Unlike many younger female rockers, Shakira writes and sings much of her own material and, given that she's sometimes out of breath due to her dance moves, is actually singing onstage. Those who know her only from her pop hits will probably be shocked that she does justice to AC/DC's "Back in Black." She's a serious tomboy! At a time when stadium rock is supposedly dead, Shakira is an especially charismatic singer fronting a capable band.

The DVD is the real deal here, containing a full-length live concert and some nice extras. The CD is ok, and is nice to have if you really enjoy some of the live versions and want to listen to them later. But, for me, the DVD is the reason to buy this combination and the price is definitely right.

Free Music Review: Great Value for the Price, Documentary is Great
Hit: 4 Stars

I'll be honest--I've never been in love with "Underneath Your Clothes" or "The One," which are both included in the DVD and CD, and would have preferred that Inevitable and Estoy Aqui were included instead of those songs. I loved watching the concert, although I skipped through those two songs I don't like. It was neat watching her play drums and belly dance with lit candles balanced on her head!

WIth this purchase you get a 90-minute concert and a 10-song CD as well as an hour-long documentary. The documentary was actually my favorite part of the whole set. I feel like those who are acquainted with Shakira's music but don't know as much about her personality are in for a real treat watching the documentary. It shows a real struggle she had during her crossover to the "American" market and it really showed me how hard it was for her to come to terms with the marketing machine. All in all, this is a great buy for Shakira fans! The more I learn about this woman, the more I truly admire her!
