Free Music Review: Shall we dance?
Hit: 4 Stars

I was watching a special on the making of "Shall We Dance?" on Bravo a couple of weeks ago when I heard the Pussycat Dolls' sensuous interpretation of the song "Sway". I was immediately hooked. Granted the movie looks awful and something I wouldn't even check out of the library (if I ever saw the dvd on the shelves) for all the tea in China. The music on the other hand was worth hearing after I became hooked on "Sway". I recently picked up the soundtrack. Despite the cheesy cover, the music is worth listening to. The music is a mix of Latin and Parisian music with a dash of pop and r&b. I think the cd would have been perfect had the Pussycat Doll's version of "Sway" didn't open up the cd but would have been a perfect closer. I think any of the instrumental songs would have been better to open up the cd. I didn't think the Mya track "Lets Dance" was anything to write home about but then again I am not a fan of Mya or r&b music in general. Her version of David Bowie's "Lets Dance" cannot compete with the original version. Nevertheless it is an alright song. It sure beats the song by Jamie Cullum whose music has never struck a chord with me. "I Could Have Danced All Night" is definitely one song on this cd I could have easily lived without hearing. Peter Gabriel's cover of the Magnetic Fields' "Book of Love" is beautiful and sent chills down my spine. It is a gorgeous ballad. I loved all the instrumental tracks, especially "Under the Bridges of Paris" and "The "L" Train". Rachel Fuller's "Wonderland" sounds a bit out of place since most of the songs have a Latin or Parisian feel but I still like "Wonderland". If the name Rachel Fuller is familiar, she sang "Touched" on Delerium's last studio album "Chimera". She has a beautiful voice, kinda like the former lead singer of the 10,000 Maniacs. "Wonderland" is another beautiful ballad. Although not perfect, the cd is quite fun to listen to. The music will make you want to dance.

If you left the movie barely able to control the urge to dance, this soundtrack is for you. If the movie did not make you want to dance, stop right here -- I don't even want you reading my review! If you haven't seen the movie yet, rent the original Japanese version on video first. It will allow you to appreciate a quality remake, very faithful to the original but with small changes that make it very significantly American. Then buy the soundtrack and a single red rose for your sweetheart...and dance him or her to the end of time.

And yes, I DID see the movie. I found it delightful, light hearted and oh so not offensive (as the current genre (of movies today)). Richard Gere is a long-time favorite and J-Lo is indeed as multi-talented as she is beautiful - those of us who watched her career from day one know that young lady CAN DANCE! The Tango Sequence, with the hottest track I've heard in awhile (Santa Maria/Gotan Project) made me want to get up and dance. I basically bought the CD for Santa Maria, but found that I liked the whole CD.

I missed this movie when it was released, and caught it late one night
when I was "flicking". It is perfect entertainment--clean, funny, and
thoughtful. For those who say it is "cornpone", I would agree, but that
only makes it more interesting in this age of instant gratification. Go
ahead, take a chance on it. I've shown it to every member of my family-
(and that includes all ages) and they have all loved it.

Free Music Review: Two to Tango
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a very nice, eclectic, set of music, from the quickstep of Happy Feet, to the tango of Santa Maria, to the Paso Doble of Espana Cani, to the Waltz of Moon River, it goes on and on, every song invites you to dance. If they had only found room for a little Merengue, I'd have given it five stars, but as is, this is a great album that should at least get you tapping your toes, if not on your feet with a partner or not.
