Free Music Review: This Sure Impresses Me Much
Hit: 5 Stars

Shania Twain has always been one of my favourite artists. No one in Britain (including myself) really knew who she was until she released the international version of the now-classic "That Don't Impress Me Much" in May 1999, but since then she has gone on to become of our country's best loved singers. Shania is the artist who single-handily perfected the pop/country crossover. And it was a perfect crossover: her third album "Come On Over" was released in late 1997 and by early 2000 had sold a staggering 36 million copies worldwide to become the biggest selling album by a female recording artist in history. This album is still a huge seller and will no doubt cross the 40 million sales mark over the next few years. As an album it has classic status in the industry, and this fact alone will keep it selling for years.

It's rather unusual to see Shania as the world's biggest selling female artist, but that's pretty much what she is. She's not just a singer, but a remarkable entertainer as well. If you didn't know your facts you'd probably say Madonna or Mariah Carey had the biggest selling female album ever, but nope, Shania does! The reason for this is that she appeals to such a wide audience: kids, adults and even grandparents. She's one of America's sweethearts in that she's not going to release an inaccessible alternative record or let her boob 'accidentally' fall out on stage, and I think if the artist is honest about that then they deserve respect.

Shania and her husband write simple pop songs with catchy hooks and foot-tapping melodies and they don't pretend to be anything else. This has led a lot of critics to dismiss Shania's music as simply elevator music, and maybe it is, but so what? I for one love intelligent and thought-provoking music, but too much is never good. You have to have variety! That's where an artist like Shania steps in. So if you're looking for a great hits album with light pop music that doesn't weigh heavy on the cerebral cortex, then Shania's "Greatest Hits" is a must-own.

The material on the album is arranged by studio album, with a chunk of songs from one album filling the first few tracks, then the singles from another album following this, and so on. Shania's 2002 album Up! is the focus of this album's first three tracks. "Forever And For Always," "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" and "Up!" are the first three tracks and were all pretty big worldwide hits. Then we get the selection of Shania's biggest hits, all from the Come On Over album. There are a total of eight songs here from that mammoth album, and they are "Come On Over," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" That Don't Impress Me Much," "From This Moment On," "Honey, I'm Home," "You're Still The One," "Don't Be Stupid" and "Love Gets Me Every Time." The reason so many songs were released from this album is that certain songs were released in certain countries, such was the universal appeal of this album. I personally love all of them. The reason for me buying this album comes next, and in the form of the six singles from the album "The Woman In Me." This was Shania's 1995 hit album and the songs from it on this hits collection are "No One Needs To Know," "You Win My Love," "I'm Outta Here," "The Woman In Me," "Any Man Of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" These songs definitely possess a more country feel to them, as Shania gradually broke away from the country sound with each studio album.

There are also four brand new songs on this album, in the form of "Party For Two" with Mark McGrath, "Don't!" "Party For Two" with Billy Currington and "I Ain't No Quitter." I'm not really fond of these new tracks, probably because I've become so accustomed to the real classics on this album. However, they make for a nice addition.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

Shania's Greatest Hits was a worthy purchase for me, as European fans will probably only have the International release of Come On Over which came out in 1999. The US version of the album is more country-fied than the European version, so for me to hear some of the songs from that album in their original format was interesting. However, I think I prefer the International versions. Also, a lot of the songs have been edited which was obviously so that the record company could fit more songs onto the album (every album has an 80-minute maximum playing time). The inlay of the album could also have had more pages with more pictures of Shania, along with a Thank You list. However, when you look at the superb hits on this album, you realise it's not just a quick cash-in, and more of a celebration of one artist's tremendous success in the music industry.

Free Music Review: Great C.D.!
Hit: 5 Stars

19 out of the 21 songs on this C.D. are pure gold, and they are so varied in style that there is a song for every country music fan. One of the biggest plus-es of the album is that the songs are spread around. For instance, the album starts out with a tender ballad, then goes on to a dance-able anthem. On one of Ms. Twain's last albums, "Up!", she put all of the upbeat songs on one CD, and the slower songs on the second. The community of fans was split in half; some were pleased with the upbeat/downbeat division, and other fans wished that they had been mixed up amongst each other. I was more of the latter, so this CD was a great step up for Shania. Now, I'll give my reviews of each song:

1. Forever and For Always 8.5/10---This song has a beautiful melody, vocals, and message, but the lyrics get a bit recycled.

2. I'm Gonna Getcha Good! 15/10---One of my favorite Shania songs. It's upbeat, dance-able, and very fun to listen to and sing along with. The lyrics are simple, and yet very powerful.

3. Up! 7/10---The melody and vocals are good, but the lyrics are less than impressive.

4. Come on Over 9/10---Fun, carefree, and lighthearted, Shania is obviously having a good time as she sings this.

5. Man! I Feel Like A Woman! 15/10---Need I say more? This excellent song has proven to be an anthem for women everywhere and a great karaoke number. Just TRY to listen this all the way through through without singing, or even humming, along.

6. That Don't Impress Me Much 10/10---This is the dance version. This beat is great and the lyrics are well-written, and Shania has fun with it.

7. From This Moment 10/10---This song, which is super-popular for weddings, is beautiful, sweet, and very touching. The instrumentals are stirring, and Shania's voice soars.

8. Honey, I'm Home 5/10---This is definately not one of Ms. Twain's better songs. The lyrics are downright awful, and the beat is not very fitting. For instance, it goes from the foot-stomping aura of Queen's "We Will Rock You," then the chorus has a honkey-tonk vibe.

9. You're Still the One 10/10---A very beautiful and haunting ballad about eternal love (awww).

10. Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) 6/10---The melody is very catchy, but the lyrics are kind of repetative. Also, the one verse "Don't freak out until you know the facts/ Relax...Max!" throws me off every time I hear it.

11. Love Gets Me Every Time 8/10---Catchy, carefree, and fun.

12. No One Needs To Know 10/10---I really like this song about a secret crush. Very country-ish, it is well-written and catchy.

13. You Win My Love 9/10---This song has a great tune. I can't find much wrong with it.

14. (If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here! 8/10---This sultry song about men who carelessly pick up women has a great beat and lyrics, but it sounds like Shania's trying to make her voice sexy, and it doesn't really give the sound she was obviously going for (it sounds like she's drunk, actually).

15. The Woman In Me (Needs The Man In You) 9/10---Slow and beautiful, but again, Shania is trying to make her voice sound sexy...*YOU SOUND FINE NATURALLY, SHANIA!* However, the song is one of my favorites.

16. Any Man of Mine 15/10---The song that jump-started Ms. Twain's career. She shines, and was apparently having fun when she recorded this. It'll have you singing along in no time.

17. Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? 10/10---Catchy song about an adulterous lover. Shania's showing her country roots here, and she sounds great.

18. Party For Two 10/10---This version with Mark McGrath is super dance-able, and the music and the two singers are great, but I like the one with Billy Currington better.

19. Don't! 8/10---This slow ballad is very sweet and moving. The chorus is very haunting, and the backup singers do their job nicely.

20. Party For Two 15/10---Who cares if Billy Currington sounds a little flat on his first few notes? He and Shania are exploding with chemistry, and that makes the song great. You'll want to jump up and dance with this song.

21. I Ain't No Quitter 0/10---Oh my God. Shania, what were you thinking when you recorded this? Just ten seconds into the song, I was wanting to you to "quit" singing and shut up.

Bad songs aside, you do not want to miss this album. Buy it today!

Free Music Review: Ain't No Quitter Here
Hit: 5 Stars

Shania is one of the greatest artists of the modern day, she's the mastermind behind the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist, the highest selling country album of all-time, tied with AC/DC's "Back In Black" for the sixth highest selling album ever, and she's the only artist to have three consecutive diamond albums.

With all that aside, she's still one of the greatest songwriters and performers ever. Her live show can not be beat and her songs are always catchy and relevant to one's life.

This album contains all of her biggest hits from "The Woman In Me", "Come On Over", and "Up!", plus it has three new songs on it.

The album goes in reverse chronological order (I'm sure there's an actual term for that), starting with the song "Forever and For Always" which is a very meaningful and beautiful song about love lasting forever. It goes straight into "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" which was her comeback single in 2002, and she surely got us ALL good with that song. "Up!" is next and it's just a fun, tongue-in-cheek kind of song. Very Shaniaesque.

Following the "Up!" songs are the ones from "Come On Over", including "You're Still The One", "That Don't Impress Me Much", and "From This Moment On" -- all of which were huge hits in the states and Internationally. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman", "Honey, I'm Home" and "Don't Be Stupid! (You Know I Love You)", which are three of her best songs to perform live are also included. It also includes "Love Gets Me Every Time" and "Come On Over"... now, you have to understand that "Come On Over" is my favorite CD of all time, so I could go on and on about it.

After we go through her biggest selling album, we find some of the true gems. The songs that weren't completely overpolished and sound really homey. "No One Needs To Know" has a kind of stripped down acoustic feel to it. A nice change of pace from the previous tracks on here. After that we run into "You Win My Love" which was a HUGE hit for Shania, and is probably the most rock-influenced song on "The Woman In Me", which should come as no surprise since it was written by her husband/producer Mutt Lange.

Then you hit "I'm Outta Here!" which is another great live song from Shania. With a fun beat and awesome lyrics, it's no wonder this was such a big hit for her with fans. After that you come into "The Woman In Me" which is one of Shania's slowest, but most beautiful songs. This is such an emotional song and Shania sings it magnificently.

After that you hit two of Shania's biggest-known songs with fans, "Any Man Of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" - I know some people who aren't Shania fans, but they like at least one of those two songs. And who can't? They're awesome country tunes with a bit of rock that really pulls the entire Shaniaesque attitude together.

Now we've got the three (technically four) new songs from Shania... my personal favorite of these is "Don't!" which is such an emotional ballad about a relationship that needs some mending. It could possibly be one of Shania's best songs ever.

"Party for Two" is the newest single from Shania, and it comes in a pop and country version to better suit her fans. The pop version is with Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath, he has a unique vocal styling, but I'm not too sure that it completely fits with the song. The awesome beat makes up for it though. On the country version, Shania teams up with Billy Currington, a country newcomer with a southern sexy voice fit PERFECTLY for the track. It's too bad the song is somewhat poorly written. Fun song, but it's also weak.

Closing off the entire album is "I Ain't No Quitter" which is one of the most unique and different songs Shania has ever put out. It has a country-swing beat that puts you in the feel of an old western club almost. An awesomely written song about a guy not quitting his bad habits "He drinks, he smokes, he cuts, he swears, and he tells bad jokes...", but the girl in the song is stubborn and isn't giving up on him either. Very well done.

This is a must-have for any music fan, period. No matter what your tastes are, you'll love this 21 track mega-disc that's destined to put a smile on your face.

Free Music Review: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits
Hit: 5 Stars

Who is Shania Twain? .....for those of you whe were living under a rock during the mid to late 90's, she is the female who re-defined country music for the better good with a breath of fresh air, a unique style, exceptional songwriting, attitude, strong independent character and a versitile musical arrangement along with rock solid production. ...oh and she is one of the most successful artists in history, her "Come On Over" album is the biggest selling album EVER by a female artist and the 5th or so biggest selling album of all time. It is basically the female equivalent of Thriller!
Shania writes all of her own songs and melodies on guitar and does a wonderful job singing them. But not only that, she earned her way to stardom by growing up extremely poor, having her birth father walk out on her at a young age, singing in bars at night from the age of 8, losing BOTH her parents in a car accident at 21 and having to cut her chances of having a musical career short to parent her younger sibelings while singing at a resort to pay the bills, so she has truly payed her dues.

Now that Shania has finally released her Greatest Hits album, you can have all her greatest songs on 1 CD! I Ain't No Quitter: 8/10 - One of those songs you'll probably either love or hate. Really country/swing sounding, a real grower.
