Free Music Notes for Woman in MeFree Music Review: I disliked country music for 50 years but......... Hit: 5 Stars
I am not a country fan despite trying to listen to country radio and watching CMT daily (mainly to get a glimpse of Shania--no luck as CMT ignores her now). All of the male singers sound the same and most of the women too. So since I can't see Shania on CMT (rarely) I'll drop CMT from my daily viewing. However, The Woman In ME really got my attention but only after I had bought Come ON Over (which really got me liking Shania). At first I listened to TWIM sparingly as it wasn't as high energy as COO or UP! However, its her voice and the emotion and passion in it as she sings the songs that really got to me. And then I started listening to the words and singing along and bang; I realized just how much emotion I also felt. Her songs make a very strong emotional connection with me and its through that magnificent and often underrated voice of hers which definitely has some magical quality to it (but I can't put it into words). The messages are very straightforward and clear and I think that there is absolute brilliance in the simplicity of the whole package. Her and Mutt are brilliant songwriters who write about things in everyday life that most people can relate to. Critics pan the lyrics as being too simple, mundane, whatever. However, they fail to recognize that GENIUS is basically being able to keep things simple and direct and still getting the message or meaning out. (There are already too many "complicated" ,"deep" songwriters out there and I for one haven't the patience to try and figure out what the heck they are singing about) This is a characteristic of all of Shania's work and that is why she is often panned by the critics. Whats this nonsense about her voice having no range (its true that Whitney and Celine have a higher range but they don't evoke the same emotions as Shania). Every song on TWIM is a hit as far as I am concerned and Shania has no filler stuff on her albums period. This is one album which I can listen to again and again and never get tired of it especially when in the mood for something contemplative. Shania's voice is like no others and you know its her singing the moment she utters the first words. It is soulful, passionate, and melodic and actually if you have listened to several of her albums and seen several of her live performances you would realize that she has quite a range and versatility in her voice like no other singer, which can easily cut across musical genres. Thats why Nashville and country music traditionalists have such a hard time figuring her out and taking her seriously. You can call it country-rock/pop, new country, commercial country or whatever you like but the truth is; it is just beautiful and brilliant music. So I don't try to find a category for Shania because I would get just as confused as the Nashville crowd. Shania is Shania who comes from country roots but has been exposed to all genres of music and influenced by them all; which results in a totally unique and distinctive musical style reflecting all of these diverse elements. She sounds like no other artist and that is one of the BIG reasons millions of people including myself are such diehard fans. Compared to her, everyone else sounds the same and thats just boring and thats why, even though I can appreciate the "other" talent out there I don't feel particularly motivated to go out and buy Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Faith, Martina etc. So when you add a superb and unique voice to the songs and great musicians you get an album like no other country album. I don't want to talk about traditional or non-traditional country, pop, rock or whatever; who cares. Its brilliant soulful music which moves a lot of people and that is the power in it. I can't really say which Shania song on any album is my favourite since it fluctuates week to week---I think they are all my favourites. TWIM is more country than COO and UP! but that is simply one phase of Shania's career. She will constantly evolve as any artist must (otherwise they stagnate) and it may be a while before we see something closely resembling country again but you know that artists often return to their roots every so often as their career progresses. I really don't care because I am not obsessed by country, rock, pop, world beat or whatever; only in beautiful, soulful, music. This is what Shania and Mutt produce and I hope they keep it up forever and for always.
Free Music Review: Extraordinary Album-But Not Revolutionary Hit: 5 Stars
Shania Twain rocketed into superstardom with THE WOMAN IN ME and it isn't hard to understand why. This is an exceptional CD the twelve songs are rock-solid packed with personality and character as well as fantastic singing. The mistake that most reviewers make is that this is not a revolutionary album. The experiments and new flavored-country sound had been toyed with as early as the 1973 on Gram Parsons' GP album. Several women of Country music had been merging and developing the same sound over the course of two decades. Emmylou Harris' QUARTER MOON IN A TEN CENT TOWN (1978) matched contemporary pop/country songs with Country-flavored arrangements. Linda Ronstadt's breakthrough HEART LIKE A WHEEL (1974) was a fascinating blend of Country and Rock influences. Juice Newton's JUICE (1981) blended several different forms of Rock, Country, and Pop. All of Rosanne Cash's albums have a feminist tone, and Cash composed most of her 1985 album RHYTHM & ROMANCE, which blended Rock and Country seamlessly. What Shania Twain did was to take these experiments and craft a flawless CD which suited the 1995 Country and Pop markets perfectly. THE WOMAN IN ME is a very strong CD, and highly enjoyable listening. Twain works with Robert "Mutt" Lange for a set of exceptional tunes including soon-to-be classics "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" and "Any Man Of Mine". With incredible hooks in each of the songs, this is remarkable listening: start to finish. "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is" is a beautiful ballad which opens the disc. There's some pop accents in this stunning country ballad (a characteristic of the entire album (this is not a bad thing). "Any Man Of Mine" was a huge hit, and inspired a few-comic paradoies. "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" is a majestic country hit, perfectly crafted for country radio, but very clever. "If You're Not In It For Love" takes a long-going pop/rock theme into country vocabulary; the desire to avoid one-night stands. "The Woman In Me" is another wonderful ballad. "If There's Life After Love" is a beautiful piece of music, with a memorable chorus and inspirational lyrics. "If It Don't Take Two" is packed with character and terrific arrangements. Lange's composition "You Win My Love" rocks, and Twain's vocals fit perfectly. "Raining On Our Love" is a classic styled love song, again with a gorgeous performance. Twain's solo composition "Leaving Is The Only Way Out" is the same type of song, but with a completely different feel. "No One Needs To Know" is my favorite-it's so much fun. With a bouncy, instantly likeable melody, and lyrics anticipating marriage and bliss, this is a winner. What's even more brilliant is the way she ends the album, "God Bless The Child" is simple, sad, and real. I usually don't listen to that song. It's a virtually flawless CD, and it works well for fans of easy-going pop music, since most of country's characteristic darkness is absent. THE WOMAN IN ME is a blockbuster. It's definitely the best mainstream country release of the year. (Though Emmylou Harris' WRECKING BALL runs circles around everything released in 1995). This disc is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Those who claim this is Country in a new vision are speaking fallacy and haven't gotten familiar with the works before. Extraordinary Album.
Free Music Review: A Deep Look Into the Woman in Shania Twain Hit: 5 Stars
Following Shania's relatively unsuccessful debut album in 1993, there have been some changes to her management; the more pertinent one being her marriage to rock guru John "Mutt" Lange. Much different than her self-titled debut album, this 1995 release is one that takes mainstream country music and blends it with infectious pop hooks and a down-to-earth rock sensibility.Opening the album is the woeful track "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)", a beautifully orchestrated ballad with excellent musical accompaniment and saddening lyrics. Following that song is the rather vivacious "Any Man of Mine", a song in which Shania clearly defines what she wants in a man. Is she being the slightest bit pushy and too demanding? Absolutely not. If you listen closely, the qualities she mentions in this song more or less add up to a well-rounded, morally upstanding individual. However, that is not the case is the infamous question "Whose! Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?". Contrary to the title's connotation, this song is not in-your-face and spiteful, but a very serious warning of how dangerous cheating on someone is. Lyrics such as "...and whose heart did you steal I wonder..." sum it up; love is about commitment. The following track once again identifies Shania's strong bond with the power of love. "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" is pretty easy to understand if you can shake the really catchy groove that Shania is so good at inserting into her songs. Probably the most musical track on the album is "The Woman In Me (Needs the Man in You)". Opening with a lush piano introduction, the song really takes on a life of its own, and the emotions present make this song a standout on the album. The rest of the album mine as well be highlighted as well as the fiery "You Win My Love", the emotional "Is There Life After Love?", the catchy &quo! t;No One Needs to Know", and the heart-melting "G! od Bless the Child" make this album worthy of its Grammy Award and sales in excess of 12 million worldwide. "The Woman In Me" is one of the most impressive pieces of introspective writing that Shania has accomplished. Some critics and listeners will write her off as a studio creation. However, that could not be further from the truth. Be sure to take a close look at the woman of Shania Twain. It's a beautiful one--inside and out. Overall Grade: A
Free Music Review: Shania Twain Has A Voice To Be Reckoned With! Hit: 5 Stars
I have always liked Shania Twain's music and singing, but I never got around to buying any of her albums until recently. I waited too long! I've seen a few of her videos on VH1 and MTV before, but didn't think much of it until I saw and heard the video for "Any Man of Mine". She sings that song so well and it stuck in the back of my head long afterwards. From that point on, I said to myself "I have to get the album that song is on." (Yes, she also has an unbelievable body!) For country music, I only like female singers. Most male singers sound all the same to me, except for Garth Brooks. He has an exceptionally unique voice which stands out from the rest of the men. Shania Twain has an OUTSTANDING, POWERFUL voice which is really shown in this album and in 'Come On Over'. Her lyrics can best be described as sassy, with so much realness to them that it's almost stunning, especially in 'Come On Over'. When I hear her voice, I am reminded that life is good for those who want to live it and that life is good, in general. It's all in her super-powerful voice. When I hear her sing, I'm also reminded that "everthing's okay". Her music has a lot of pop and rock influence in it, which I also love about her music, especially since she collaborated with her husband/producer, "Mutt" Lange, in writing and making this (and the next) album. Lange is a producer for many Rock and Hard Rock bands like Def Leppard and Bryan Adams. The rock is there in songs like "Any Man of Mine", "You Win My Love", and especially in the 'rockin' the house down' "If You're Not In It For Love (I'm Oughta Here!)" That song is almost a Rock n' Roll song! But, don't be confused. This is still a country music album. But it's much more of a country music album than her next album, 'Come On Over', which transcends into the pop genre! Of course, that explains why her videos got airplay on MTV and VH1. Shania Twain is like an all music singer! Whatever musical category you like, you will hear it in Shania Twain's music. Sarah McLachlan's voice has power, too, but Shania Twain's voice has power in a totally different way.
Free Music Review: One of the best country albums...EVER! Hit: 5 Stars
This being Shania's first successful album -- it's no wonder why! It's great! Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore) starts off the pack with a little bit of sadness, it's also one of my favorite Shania songs - the whole song is just wonderful. The beat, the lyrics, the heartache. Great country song. Any Man of Mine is what I call my dating theme song - describes what I want in any man of mine. I love her little "Whoo's!" A word of advice: Ya gotta shimmy and shake, make an earthquake, kick, turn, stomp, stomp, then you jump - heel to toe, do-ci-do 'til your boots wanna break, 'til your feet and back ache, keep it movin' 'til you just can't take anymore! Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under - Great country song about cheatin'. Nice country beat, and wonderful instruments. If You're Not In It For Love - The intro freaked me out at first, but I love the song...wonderful drums!!! The Woman In Me - WONDERFUL song. While it's not in my top ten favorite Shania songs, the song is just beautiful. Is There Life After Love? - I love this song, her vocals are just gorgeous on it...especially at the part of the chorus where she goes "Like a-angels in heaven..." beautiful. If It Don't Take Two - GREAT country shuffle song! Me like it a lot. Great fiddle work! You Win My Love - this song is so fun, Mutt is really a great writer! Raining On Our Love - Great song about rain and love. Perfect mix if it wasn't a heartbreak song....I love it. Leaving Is The Only Way Out - Probably one of my least favorites on the album...I don't know why. Just doesn't fit my fancy. No One Needs To Know - My FAVORITE Shania song on this album - if not of all-time. It's so fun, and catchy. Great cheeky lyrics...love it. God Bless the Child - It sounds kind of draggy, though I love it because it's accappella. The single version is much better, though! All in all, great buy for country and non-country fans alike.
