Free Music Review: Quite good but it can't compare to the live experience Hit: 4 Stars
The music industry is a funny business. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings have seemingly come out of nowhere last Fall with this album and have created a serious buzz, when in reality this is their third album, after 2002's "Dap Dipping" and 2005's "Naturally" albums came and went, with hardly anyone noticing.
On "100 Days, 100 Nights" (10 tracks; 34 min., plus bonus CD) Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings continue to recreate and reinterpret the Motown sound from the 1960s, with excellent results. Check out "Nobody's Baby", with an instantly catchy opening bass riff and then the rest of the band joining in. The horns play an integral and central role in the band's sound. Other highlights include "Tell Me" (which recalls the Supremes), "Let Them Knock", and "Something's Changed". In all, this is a great set and at just 34 min., it is over before you know it. The bonus CD (58 min.) is equally appealing, namely a fictitious "Binky Griptite's Ghetto Funk Power Hour", in which the WDAP DJ spins a variety of artists from the Daptone Records label.
I recently had the opportunity to catch Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings in concert in support of the "100 Days, 100 Nights" album, and to say that I was blown away would be an understatement. Sharon Jones surely must be "the hardest working woman in show business" these days. And the comparisons to James Brown are not accidental. She puts on an unforgettable show of non-stop dance, high energy and fun. Even if you are not sure about buying this album, DO NOT MISS Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings if they come to your town.
