Free Music Review: Ms. Otis . . .
Hit: 4 Stars

There is little that is groundbreakingly original about this album, except for the fact that it so completely conjures the power of visceral, driving 60s soul in an era dominated by overproduced, slick, and corporate R&B. Sharon Jones has the voice and the emotional force of Otis Redding, and a band that anchors her mercurial vocals with the same disciplined driving backbeat that defined Otis's sound. The production is clean, stark, and dark - in places, inflected with echoey reverb, as if one were hearing it emerging from an unseen dive-bar, while out walking alone on a dark night. This is not happy soul or macho strutting, of the Sam and Dave, or Wilson Pickett vintage. Rather it is bitter, righteous, and inflamed. Not all the tracks rise to the level of the title track, and some seem more like basic Soul 101, but it is nonetheless solid, rich Soul from start to finish - a stunningly good album, worthy of repeated listenings and a permanent place in the R&B canon.

Free Music Review: The real deal!

It's real sad that it took an overrated faker like Amy Winehouse to use Sharon Jones' backing band in order to make people recognize her, but still it's great that she's finally getting the attention she deserves. At 50 years of age, Sharon Jones is the sound of classic soul and funk. She's not trying to churn out some throwback junk. This is the real thing. And the same goes for her band, The Dapkings and pretty much anything on Daptone Records is good. I personally would have liked this album to be a bit funkier, but overall, there are no skips so you really can't complain. Buy this album, then check her out live to be really blown away.

I have to agree with Wes' opinion below, the real value of this set is the Bonus disc with samples of other Daptones artists (The GhettoFunkPowerHour). Not only is it a very hot sampling of some fantastic deep-funk, it's also longer than the Sharon disc. Sharon's 10 tunes are pleasant enough, but the 60s-sounding production is a real distraction (and believe me, I'm an analog guy), and all-in-all it's a little tame for an artist who can obviously do better. In fact, Sharon's stuff on Ghetto is probably better than anything on the "legit" release. Good buy for the price.

Free Music Review: All hail Queen Sharon.

While I'm glad that the Dap-King's success with Amy Winehouse has since led to more exposure to the till-now underexposed, fantastic, so-much-more-talented Ms. Jones, I'm ALMOST worried that the mellower, dare I say, Winehouse-esque groove of this album will paint an incomplete picture of her range for newcomers. This album is so solid, there really isn't room for real complaint, though. But I really do recommend picking up Dap-Dippin with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings for more of her incredible dance numbers -- and of course, nothing beats a live show!!!

First things first: there ain't nothing like seeing this lady and her kings live, where you'll shake your booty 'till kingdom come. Meanwhile, put this on your IPod or CD player: close your eyes, and you can almost smell the scent of old vinyl. Without being completely derivative, Sharon and the Dap Kings evoke the old sound of early Aretha, Eartha Kitt, or Etta James. Somehow the sound is both historical and completely of the moment. Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, two recent faves, have exploited this sound to major success.
