Free Music Notes for 100 Days, 100 NightsFree Music Review: Solid Retro R&B Hit: 3 Stars
The Dapkings are a retro soul band with a very tight, fun sound (honking baritone sax, etc.). They provide the funky background for Amy Winehouse. Here they are fronted by Sharon Jones. I don't know her history, but she has a strong voice. The album is very listenable, but perhaps a tad unvaried. I enjoy it more in a mix with other discs than straight through. The album comes with a fun full-length sampler of daptone records with a "DJ" introducing their different acts.
Free Music Review: pretty good Hit: 3 Stars
got a chance recently to hear Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and I dug the Soulful Grooves that will make you have mid to late 60's Groove flashback. the album feels more like a Jam Session and the tracks themselves Produced and arranged in a way that will go over even better live. this is a cool set to hear though.
Free Music Review: tiresome Hit: 2 Stars
My wife heard about this on NPR so I bought it for her. If you like the Memphis R&B sound these guys don't deviate much from it. Personally I found it repetitive and numbing. There is little room for invention within this musical convention that has not been explored better by others previous to this effort. I also found Ms. Jone's voice less than remarkable. Safe, but uninspired
Free Music Review: Recording quality poor, but good album Hit: 2 Stars
I heard the Dap Kings interview on PBS radio and they sounded great.
The CD sounded just OK the recording quality is poor.
There are about four good songs the rest are average.
