Free Music Notes for These Four WallsFree Music Review: Keepin' Her Fan Base Hit: 5 Stars
I've always been a Shawn Colvin fan. Since her earliest CD her music spoke to me. I've seen her live dozens of times, cried my eyes out to "I Don't Know Why" (off of Fat City) and waiting with bated breath for each new CD. Her life seems so interesting and full of brave decisions, hard earned lessons and through it all an innocent sweetness like "it'll all work out." Am I reading too much into an artist I don't even know? Maybe. But this new album is more of the same yet completely different and beautiful. "Fill Me Up" is gorgeous, plaintive and worth playing over and over, as well as "These Four Walls" and "So Good to See You."
I can tell that having a child has changed Shawn in a profound way, made her more in awe of life and more aware of how quickly it passes. But, if you're a parent, you'll agree, how can it not?
I love this CD.
Free Music Review: Colvin To The Core Hit: 5 Stars
The posted Amazon editor review pretty much hits the mark in regard to Shawn Colvin's new CD "These Four Walls." It's been a long wait since "Whole New You" but this CD was worth the wait. Colvin remains an astute storyteller and her melodies and vocal delivery again shine (lyrics like "We never lived, we just survived" from "Summer Dress" show how she can hit you emotionally with simple words - - which is, to me, the hallmark of a really good songwriter). Every song here is strong with "Summer Dress" and "Venetian Blue" being standouts. If you enjoy "A Few Small Repairs" and "Whole New You" you will love this CD. John Leventhal again provides great production and musical prowess - - let's hope they always work together. Heart's Nancy Wilson recently said in an interview that she is "Colvin to the core." Listen to "These Four Walls" and you'll be to!
Free Music Review: The best songwriter around returns... Hit: 5 Stars
I am aware that this may be a controversial opinion, but I think Shawn Colvin is arguably the best, or at the very least, one of the best, songwriters around today. Her newest album will make any fan of her earlier work feel like a kid in a candy store. I think the best tracks are "Cinnamon Road" and "These Four Walls." Shawn Colvin's songwriting is at it's best - the lyrics, as usual, blow you away; the guitar work is careful, thoughtful, and stunning; and her voice is unparalleled.
In short, I am a great fan of hers, and this album contains some of the finest songs of her career.
I was lucky enough to see her on tour a couple of months ago. If you like her records, and she's ever touring in your town - GO. She's even better live than she is on the CD's.
Free Music Review: Best yet Hit: 5 Stars
I have enjoyed all of Shawn Colvin's work. This cd is special probably because of the change in label. The music is not so produced, less instruments, and therefore probably more personality. Shawn Colvin isn't someone that you can sit down and enjoy easily. It takes some listening to acquire a taste. Also her lyrics have an edge. Sometimes she takes that a bit too far. I am no puritan but do think the f word in the last three recordings is old. Perhaps she thinks it is a good luck charm. I would also object to the Bee Gees song. Shawn is a wonderful writer and she has no need to borrow songs that we have all heard too often. "Even Here We Are" is a wonderful song and in my opinion worth recording. Don't take so long the next time.
Free Music Review: As fresh as daily milk Hit: 5 Stars
Shawn Colvin is up there with Rickie Lee Jones and is simply one of the best in the singer songwriter vault. This album is sensitively produced by John Levanthal, who produced the first Marc Cohn albums. There are no falling scaffolding noises here, every sound slides in clearly and cleanly just where it is most effective and the mighty Marc adds his warm vocal harmonies to "Cinnamon Road". A surprise was the inclusion of "Words" from the Bee Gees but she takes it as smoothly as she writes her lyrics and she makes you think about how important or irrelevant words can be. Shawn makes every one count. I have to watch out that I don't play this album too often. I wouldn't want it to wear on me. It's as fresh as daily milk.
