Free Music Notes for 9th Ward Pickin' ParlorFree Music Review: WOW - This is GREAT Hit: 5 StarsI really love this recording. The mix of music is fantastic and it really showcases what a great singer songwriter he is. I played this for friends and most feel the same as I do. Some feel it is a bit country because on the instruments in some of the songs. I disagree whole heartedly.
Free Music Review: A nice effort, but not great Hit: 3 StarsI love "Soul's Core", which is how I discovered Shawn Mullins. I was excited to buy his latest CD and find myself quite disappointed.
Although a quality effort, well produced, the record is being let down by its songs, which generally sound safe/meek/nice and are quite obviously designed to "please crowds".
I didn't find the combination of soul, power/tension and finesse that made Soul's Core so special. If you like the "sweet" side of Shawn, you may enjoy this record though.
I can understand that he may want to widen his audience, and hence decide to go mainstream. But it's just not what makes me tick.
Free Music Review: Shawn's roots are showing Hit: 5 StarsYes Shawn's roots are showing, they are showing that he has a touch of alt-country in his roots. These songs are all very good. Beautiful Wreck is an up tempo rocker. Blue As You is a great easy listening song. Cold Black Heart is a roots/blues cut that is just great. Every song is very good. His cover of House of the Rising Sun is very cool. This cd was produced by Shawn Mullins. He knows what he is good at and this cd is it. Keep up the good work Mr. Mullins.
Free Music Review: Best yet Hit: 5 StarsI am a huge Shawn Mullins fan and with this album he reaches the mature zenith of his career. Understated, atmospheric, stripped down to its roots, it is simply spine-tingling, breathtakingly beautiful. Not since the sixties and seventies has there been an an artist that I respect as much. Buy and enjoy. This one's a keeper, future classic. Please support an artist of integrity and buy a copy of 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor.
Free Music Review: Too manufactured, overproduced Hit: 3 StarsShawn is one of those singers that you could listen to all day because of his deep raspy voice, and I couldn't be happier that he's found true companionship and gotten married, but I miss the solo guitar folksinger gigs I used to see at Eddie's Attic or on occasion in Athens. My favorite albums are Eggshells, Canyons & Caverns, Blue Sky, and the two disc Jeff's Last Dance with Matthew Kahler.
With Soul's Core, radioheads picked up the catchy Rock-a-Bye tune and ran with it. Shawn Beneath the Velvet Sun was overproduced and seemed as if he had been seduced by technology, i.e. voice effects, strange instrument distortions.
While 9th Ward gets back to a familiar style for older fans, the lyrics and delivery don't have the same passion we're used to. With a recording contract I know its difficult to produce your best work, but here's hoping that Shawn can once again find the stories that touch our hearts and can tell them as he used to.
