Free Music Notes for Units in the CityFree Music Review: Still Got Em For The L-O!! Hit: 5 StarsShawty Lo's Units In The City is a cd that will catch a lot of hate from people that haven't listened to the album ( some of em already reviewed the album!) and for those not willing to remove themselves from hip hop that was released 5,10, 20 years ago. Also people whine and cry about lyrics without realizing that Lo is pretty clever and humorous in his lyrics. We all know he isn't the greatest rapper but he is far from the worst. He's straightforward. Also his slow flow and unique voice and delivery make him likable. People are so uptight and hardheaded that they don't realize there are different types of rappers each does their own thing. Shawty Lo happens to be pretty good at what he does. He's also a pretty interesting character (check his DVD Real Bankhead Story).
Shawty Lo is one fourth of the highly hated group D4L because they dropped Laffy Taffy and helped create the `snap' movement. While I'm not a big fan of Laffy Taffy (and Lo wasn't either!), the D4L album was a sleeper. The album had some bangers on it (minus the awful Laffy Taffy) and managed to go platinum. Down for Life Shawty Lo's solo song I'm Da Man from that group album gave him many fans because it was undoubtedly the hottest song on the album. Two DJ Scream mixtapes, his "disagreements" with T.I. (the apparent King of The City) and his DVD Real Bankhead Story helped fuel the fire and helped anticipation for his solo album.
Units In The City was pretty highly anticipated however after numerous pushbacks you would think it would lose a little bit of its appeal or flare. After all some of these songs have been out for a while (They Know (please don't think that was new when it dropped!), Dunn Dunn, Lets Get It, Got Em 4 The L-O, and GA Lotto. But these songs have become anthems instead of becoming old and played. Shawty Lo doesn't disappoint with the newer songs either.100,000 is flat out dope, Foolish and Easily I Approach are all certified bangers. My favorite songs are Aint Telling You and Cut The Check. Despite popular belief he takes a break from bragging and "flexing" on the songs Feels Good To Be Here, Live My Life, and Count On Me and gets down to earth and reflective. The only wack song is That's Shawty Lo with its horrible kids sung chorus that makes it instant skip material, but other than that the album is riding.
At just under 55 minutes, Units In the City is highly enjoyable. Shawty Lo does it all by himself with no name producers and features. Say what you want about Shawty Lo he doesn't try to be something he's not. He is himself all throughout the album. The cd is pretty good. I'll probably catch some flack for this review but who cares check my resume' I know what I'm talking about. I recommend Units In The City, it gets play next to my Lupe Fiasco, Erykah Badu, One Republic, and Outkast cds.
Free Music Review: LOve itttttttttttttttttttttt ! Hit: 5 Stars Yea so I first heard this cd and wanted to burn it. Then I listened again and I love it. I dont know how the hell it grew on me like that but I love this cd.
Free Music Review: CD sucks Hit: 1 StarsWorst CD i've bought in a long time an I buy a lot of CD's. To save you the time, here's whats up with this cd. Shawty Lo is a wanna be Young Jeezy, which he proves with songs like "Let's Get It". His voice is too low and raspy to even hear if you have any bass in your car. Dey Know is a good song but you can just turn on the radio to here that. Don't buy it, it sucks, hopefully Shawty Lo will never make another album again.
Free Music Review: This is a good album Hit: 4 StarsI've listened to all kinds of rap, from Black Moon to A Tribe Called Quest, to the Pharcyde, to Spice One, to UNLV, to Goodie Mob, to Nas, to K Gates, to Lupe Fiasco, to Little Brother, to Common Sense, to Mac and everything inbetween. I'm not one of these new comers who just started listening to rap five years ago and now pretends to be a rap expert. I've been listening to rap for 26 years (I'm 26 years old). Plus, I listen to other genres of music, including artists such as Bebel Gilberto, Goldfrapp, Air, Royksopp, Massive Attack, Zero 7, Phillippe Saise, Norman Brown, Smashing Pumpkins, Elaine Elias, Fleetwood Mac, The Emotions, Atlantic Starr, Donny Hathaway etc etc.
That being said, this Units In The City is a good album. I'm sick and tired of rap snobs and wannabe rap experts hollering and crying about lyrics. I've got news for you guys, the first rappers were not spitting out complex similies (sp) and metaphors. Whether you like it or not, they were nursery rhyme raps. Yes, rap has advanced (as it should) and lyrics have become more complex and substantive. However, rap is art and there are different types of art. There's the complex stuff and then there's the straightforward, simple stuff and there's nothing wrong with either, they're just different. All rappers don't have to be the same and all rappers don't have to come with thesaraus raps. We need the simple rappers and the complex rappers and everything in between to make rap enjoyable and I can appreciate all forms (if it's good). HOWEVER, my only critisizm of Shawty Lo and other rappers such as Young Jeezy is that they glamorize selling dope and breaking the law, which can be disastrous for our increasingly impressionable youth.
Free Music Review: Only A Hookman Hit: 4 StarsD4L's Shawty LO brings forth a valiant effort in his debut solo album. Though his lyrics are not that strong, his productions and hooks are well put together. Like many of ATL's rappers, Shawty LO loves the trap and shouts much homage to his hood (Bankhead) and refers to his own name several times throughout the album. In that sense, he is separate from fellow ATL rappers the likes of T.I. and Young Jeezy. Overall, this is a decent album that would be nice to ride to feeling good and enjoying the hooks. More than likely, you won't have it in your CD player longer than a week anyway. Shawty LO should stick to snap music and hooks because rapping is not his strong suit.
My Fave 5:
100,000
Foolish
That's Shawty LO
Dey Know
Cut The Check
