Free Music Notes for Volume One

Free Music Review: entertaining
Hit: 5 Stars

This album has good music, very not typical. It has a nice vintage feel. The songs are different with only some style in common. This music is also hard to categorize, but overall relaxing type. Recommended for everyone that is interested in this unique style.

Free Music Review: Finally, A Double Threat Again
Hit: 5 Stars

I was on my way home today when I heard Zooey being interviewed on NPR about this album. I made a detour to pick it up at Borders, and I'm glad I did. "She" sings in a clear and distinctive voice that reminds me of a jazzier version of Patsy Cline. "Him" is a good arranger and musician who never overpowers the vocals with the backing music.

I think I like this one better than most of the female vocalists I listen to. She is less funny and more serious with her songwriting, and there is no tongue-in-cheek aspect on this disc. It marks Zooey's album debut as a talented singer/actress double threat, which hasn't happened in too long.

Free Music Review: Based upon first impressions
Hit: 3 Stars

I just got this album yesterday and listened to it straight through on my way to work this morning. Let me start off by saying, I love Zooey Deschanel's singing voice. I bought the whole Elf soundtrack off iTunes just to get her song. I don't think that this is a fantastic album, and I don't think that it was meant to be. It is fun and light and reminiscent of music spanning decades from the 1940s to the 1970s. It is a bit too country for my tastes. Most songs have that plaintive country twang, but I still like Johnny Cash despite his country stylings. (For reference, I HATE pretty much all country or country-like music). The lyrics and arrangements are simple. People whose reviews complain about the production value don't seem to understand that the choice to record lo-fi was a conscious one. I believe that all the choices that went into this record made an end product that can best be described as charming. Don't expect more than that, and you may be pleasantly surprised to find a unique (especially for an actress turned singer - though don't forget, just because this is her first album, doesn't mean she hasn't been singing with the band If All the Stars Were Pretty Babies for a long time) first effort from a gorgeous and talented voice.

Free Music Review: beauty and light
Hit: 4 Stars

i found this album by utter accident and fell in love with it...because sometimes a voice gives you inspiration and articultes a feeling rising that maybe you couldn't express..this album makes you FEEL... a brigher day or a quiet smile... wonderful to experience.

Free Music Review: Good listening!
Hit: 4 Stars

Wow, some of the other reviewers are super critical and harsh. I think this album has a great sound with some outstanding songs. Zoey has a beautiful voice and it really compliments M.Ward's more raspy sound nicely. Much of it has an upbeat kind of throw back sound--but I think that is what is fun and inventive (or should I say re-inventive) about it. I also think the style works well with her voice and I love the variety. I can definitely understand why Rolling Stone wrote about this and I definitely think it is a duo to watch and an album worth purchasing. Don't listen to the Naysayers--take a listen for yourself and then decide.
