Free Music Review: Superb, but perhaps not the best choice for the uninitiated

Although I felt some resistance to ordering this, based upon the unusual bass/vocal approach, I knew from the first 30 seconds it was a keeper.
Those who are unfamiliar with Sheila Jordan might be better off starting with "Portrait of Sheila" or "Lost and Found", but those who are already fans can acquire this with the asurance that it is a terrific CD. There is a uniquely "naked" intensity/quality to Jordan's singing that is very affecting. There is no barrier between the artist's feelings/perceptions
and the listener. Admittedly, this can be difficult for some people to tolerate; it's a different experience from listening to say, Ella Fitzgerald. More akin to Helen Merrill. However, if one enjoys such "personal disclosure" in a Jazz singer, and is not put off by a vocal-bass duo (the vocal-bass interplay is very accomplished; there's no sense of anything "missing" in terms of other instruments) this is a disc to return to and savor over and over.
