I can't add any better words to all the rich descriptions said about her and this album from others, except that she is one of a kind. Anything she does is unique and connects. The only other singer/songwriter I felt drawn to because of his unique sound and story-telling is Cat Stevens. It's because they both sing with raw emotion and passion and their lyrics are so dang profound! Get this album. Get all of 'em!Free Music Review: Fabulous!

I purchased this CD after hearing and loving Shelby's "Just A Little Lovin" set, and I was not disappointed. "I Am Shelby Lynne" is really a great recording with a nice variety of music, yet it all features a laid back, no pretense, total disregard for what should be popular, and in place of commercialism, one gets a totally honest set of songs, well crafted and well performed. I understand now why people have been raving about Shelby Lynne all these years, and I regret that it took me so long to discover her extraordinary talent.Free Music Review: Words fail me

This is the first time ever I don't know what to say about a CD. Whatever I write will fall way short of how brilliant and full of life 'I Am Shelby Lynne' is. Even the terms "brilliant" and "full of life" don't do this CD justice.
So, all I will write is you owe it to yourself to buy this CD. Your life will be richer for it.

"Where I'm From" cannot be touched in its humility and beauty. I swear one has visions of spanish moss as Shelby Lynne coos and purrs in Cajun French verse.
"Your Lies" an anthem for being s--t on by a lover. Who can't relate to this one. Its most most powerful statement is held within the title--your lies. not you hurt me and please pity me, but YOUR LIES. It's as if she were saying, this is the grief you have caused, so OWN it f----r!
"I'm leaving" is that horrible peak of realization. When you're tired of hurting, then you're just plain tired of hurting. This song makes a masterpiece out of this all too familiar plea.

An achingly beautiful album from a tortured woman, "I Am Shelby Lynne" is essential listening and easily one of the best albums of 2000. Bill Bottrell crafts an aurally lush but not overproduced sound that fills and envelopes the space around Lynnes confessional lyrics. This was her break from the overly produced material she recorded earlier in her Nashville career and it's unlike anything on country radio today. Her subsequent work has been good but not great. By far her best work, this is the one you'll come back to time and time again.
