Free Music Notes for I Am Shelby LynneFree Music Review: Nice. But it aint Dusty, and it aint Aretha... Hit: 2 StarsListened to the first three tracks, then put on "Dusty in Memphis". No comparison. To record a soul album, ya gotta be able to sing. Effortless control, killer highs, whispering lows (dig the first words of "Dusty in Memphis" - "Just a little lovin'..."). Shelby isnt there. Not bad - but ya need better than that to compete with the original Atlantic soul. Listen to Shelby, then put on the first two Atlantic Aretha albums, and let the real thing move your world a little.
Free Music Review: Sweet Soul Music Hit: 5 StarsWhen I heard that this album has been nominated for a grammy for best new country artist, I had to laugh. We used to call this "soul music" when I was a kid, and what Ms. Lynne is doing here is reminiscent of the music from Stax/Atlantic records that featured Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, and so many other great performers. Yes, she does sound a lot like Dusty Springfield, but there's Aretha too, and Cissy Houston, and Tony Joe White, and Isaac Hayes, and so many others because this is a woman from Alabama who grew up with all of that and she doesn't have to search for it like Dusty was--she knows exactly what this music is all about, and she knows how to make her own voice heard in it. I'm sure glad about that because I love this soulful cd!
Free Music Review: Not too shabby....Shelby Hit: 4 StarsI bought this album mostly on a lark (okay, the cover art caught my attention and I had to fill a FREE line for my BMG order). I had never heard of Shelby Lynne before and had absolutely no idea what to expect. I have an appreciation for good blues and Shelby does some pretty good blues. I've never seen or heard any of her Nashville-era work, but I eagerly await her follow-up to this one. I hope this is her Nick of Time and the next is a Luck of the Draw. (For those of you who aren't Bonnie Raitt fans, Nick of Time was Bonnie's just-short-of-classic comeback about a dozen years ago and Luck of the draw was the truly classic follow-up).So Shelby go!
Free Music Review: THE best of 2000. Hit: 5 StarsThis is the greatest record of 2000. Shelby Lynne is a true musician, and a fantastic, soulful singer. If Otis Redding and Bonnie Raitt had a love-child, that kid would be Shelby Lynne. This is truly a brilliant, moving piece of work.
Free Music Review: Thanks, Glamour! Hit: 4 StarsI only bought this CD because Glamour reviewed it as one of the best CDs of the year. So I figured, what the heck, I'll try it on for size. I definitely enjoyed it. I didn't listen to it very much in the beginning, and that's the only reason it gets four stars instead of five. It takes a little while to grow on you, and it's not the kind of CD you just pop in your car on your two hour drive home from college. However, if you sit and listen to it, and let the words grab you, then you will experience the real feeling and meaning of this lyrical message. Shelby Lynne's CD is bold and creative, and very emotional, which is what I'm really looking for sometimes. I didn't really classify this in any specific genre, because it's not country, it's not rock, and it's not pop...it's a good mixture that really sucks you in. So, I recommend it, especially to college girls who are looking for something better than NSYNC or Savage Garden and who really need some empowerment and inspiration.
