Free Music Notes for I Am Shelby Lynne

Free Music Review: it's great. buy it.
Hit: 5 Stars

i found this in my cd folder the other day, and wow, it's just as good today as it was several years ago.

she has a calming voice, a smart sense of music, and when i'm in a country mood, she fits the bill.

Free Music Review: Fantastic, raw and at times depressing................
Hit: 4 Stars

This cd is all of the above and more to me. At first listening to this cd, I was frustrated that Lynne's voice continued to trail off into an almost inaudible whisper on various songs, and I also found myself uncomfortable with the confessional tone of many of the pieces. Upon many more listens I have grown to really love this cd. Her voice sounds very bluesy to me, and the writing on such songs as "Thought it would be easier" "leaving" and "Why can't you be" are first rate. Her voice is raw and perfect for the songs chosen, though I do have to strain to hear her in places. I do love this cd, but I do not listen to it as often as some of her others, because it can be depressing. Too depressing, but her talent was finally acknowledged as a result of this cd, and I'm glad the world took note.

Free Music Review: What great production and a great voice are all about
Hit: 4 Stars

In some ways this is the best Sheryl Crow CD ever made, and while that may sound a bit funny, it's a bit true as well. The songs are above average. And unlike Bill Bottrell's work with Sheryl Crow here he has someone, Shelby Lynne, who can sing the lights out. Shelby Lynne can twist and suspend notes better than just about anybody working out there today. What she was doing singing country songs for so many years before this I'll never know because on this CD you can hear her as a first rate jazz style singer. The glove fits.

Take Shelby Lynne's voice and Bill Bottrell's great production sensibility and you have one fine album. Normally I'm not a fan of "producer vehicle" albums but here it works. In Shelby Lynne, Bottrell found the best talent for his producing skills he ever had. Too bad they never made another record together, because the whole here is way bigger than the sum of the parts.

Free Music Review: near-perfect pop-country-soul-blues classic
Hit: 5 Stars

I love its unique melding of styles. The song Leavin` is as glorious as (and not dissimilar to) Al Green. Beautiful production, good strong songs, leaves you wanting more. Released in the first month of the new century, this remains one of its best, most original and diverse albums. I don`t play it too often, but when I do - as a treat! - it never fails me. Gorgeous.

Free Music Review: Shelby at her most expressive !
Hit: 4 Stars

Shelby Lynne is country muisic's ever changing template chameleon. She backs down from no one and quite possibly doesn't give a damn where her music takes her. A raunchy title alike "I Am Shelby Lynne" sounds more like a name for a late night infomercial then the work of a musical experimentation. Don't be fooled , listen !

Lynne's frustration and hostility in these songs could be as autobiographical as any musician attempts to portray with their music. I also find it convincing that Lynne is one extremly rare artist where no matter what genre she is expressing in her music it never sounds artificial. Everytime I hear the somber "Life Is Bad", I often wonder if Mick Jagger forgot to add it to the set list of "Exile On Main St.". Many artists will claim to be expressive with musical individuality but only the good one's actually have an identity.

Lynne's songwriting, along with help from Producer Bill Bottrell strongly emphases its collaboration. At no point do I feel distraught with this record. Lynne has an ear for music, something that should never be taken for granted in an era where musicians are bombs and the importance sometimes lacks control. Serious art should't be denied but sometimes you can't always get what you want. Lynne tries, she deeply ventures into areas unknown. That's all I can say about any attained artist.
