Free Music Notes for I Am Shelby LynneFree Music Review: Dixie Chick...NOT - This girl is WAY beyond Nashville Hit: 5 StarsI am always searching for soulful, diverse singers, and bought this CD after hearing reviews like "Defies Classification.."...etc. Well, let me say that this CD is hypnotic and sooooo incredibly soulful, that I am in love with it. Her lyrics are rooted in deep, heartfelt emotions that kind of remind me when Jackson Browne writes of his heartache...people who call this CD depressing are missing the point - it's an expression of depression that we all need to hear - so, keep growing and singing Shelby.....please!
Free Music Review: This is one to own Hit: 4 StarsI knew about Shelby Lynne earlier in her career, but the clinher to buy the CD was her grammy award. This is a little different than her first CD. More of a bluesy and soul experience than a rockabilly. It still is a great CD to mellow and relax to.
Free Music Review: Depressed and out 14 bucks Hit: 1 StarsAfter reading a glowing review at a site that I hold in fairly high regard, I read some of the reviews featured here and took a chance.I didn't know much about her history, just some of the things that I had read on this customer feedback area, so in my mind, she had a pretty clean slate. I try to be open-minded about new music, but I do know what I like. As one may have already guessed by the fact that I only gave this one star, I didn't like it at all. I thought the production was terrible. Shelby has a good voice, but it was sometimes overshadowed by other instruments or percussion. The overall sound quality was muddled at best. This may have been intentional...to give an even MORE depressing sound. "Your Lies", "Leavin'", "Life Is Bad", "Thought It Would Be Easier"...if these song titles don't give you some insight on what you may be in for, nothing will. Depressing is OK, but everyone has their limits. Lastly, and here's the thing that I really learned out of this, don't just take my, or anyone else's, word for it. Listen to it before you buy. Some love this, and others don't. I didn't see much in the way of middle ground on the ratings...and I made the mistake of not researching enough.
Free Music Review: Amazon recommendation, right on target Hit: 4 StarsThis has been a recommendation by the Amazon computers every time I logged on for longer than I can remember. Well, I finally picked it up, and whoever programs that thing was right with this one.At first, I listened all the way through and wasn't completely enraptured - I hadn't been sure what to expect. She reminded me most of Sheryl Crow, with a bit of a country edge. But the more I listened to the CD, the more it grew on me - and now I can't get the songs out of my head. I'm sure her recent Grammy Award for Best New Artist will help catapult her into the limelight a little more (and her looks won't hurt, either), which could be fun. She seems to be willing to experiment with her sound, so the next few albums could be interesting.
Free Music Review: Why Can't you Be... Like Shelby Lynne?? Hit: 4 StarsI'm a lot of things, but Country Music aficionado is NOT one of them. I'll even go further to say that I've always been a snob about my music, thinking if it's not cutting edge or from Europe then it's probably not worth listening to. Hence, I always regarded Country Music as a disposable genre that was best left for the podunks from the Midwest to consume. I say this rather harsh statement because Shelby Lynne's recent album gave me such a kick in the pants! "I am Shelby Lynne" really blew away any preconceived notions I may have had about Country Music. Mind you, I'm not a full convert here, but I'll never disparage any form of music again. Special standouts on her album include "Your Lies", "Dreamsome", "Why Can't You Be", "I'm Leavin'" and "Thought it Would be Easier". Of these tracks, I can't get "Your Lies" out of my head! It's got the dramatic swagger from any song on the Grease Soundtrack, backed with the heartbreaking lyrics of a woman blindsided by a deceitful lover. In the song she's constantly taunted by her lover's lies, lamenting that his "lies won't leave me alone." Thankfully, this song and this album won't leave me alone.
