Free Music Review: A new favorite
Hit: 5 Stars

Shelby Lynne adds a haunting style to Dusty's songs that make them fresh and new, yet not feeling like they have been reheated and served up by an American Idol wanna-be. She approaches Dusty Springfield's music with a style that is not overly country (meaning not a hint of twang in the whole CD). This is my new favorite CD right now and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a Dusty Springfield fan!

Hit: 4 Stars

Shelby Lynne really took a risk trying to step into the shoes of one the most appreciated female blue-eyed soul singers of our time: Dusty Springfield. Give her credit and some praise, she has done a great job. If you are a fan of DS you will not be disappointed in the music here. My only knock is the inclusion of the song "Willie and Laura Mae Jones" by Tony Joe White. It seems out of place in this set.

Free Music Review: Minimalist Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Two reasons to buy this CD:

The maturity of her voice. It takes not years but decades to develop the phrasing, delivery and power she shows here. Just enough vibrato and Alabama-twang to put the song across yet the ability to stay on-key and on-message while softly delivering it. The other musicians are some of the best in the business and play what is necessary to highlight her voice and deliver the song. Those criticising this CD for being not uptempo enough or too heart-on-her-sleeve should listen to it again for what it is, a minimalist masterpiece in a world of pop overhype.

The terrific sound. Some other people must think she can sing, because the production group is also made up of some of the best in the business. Although recorded and mastered on the soft side, so that it sounds good on inexpensive electronics (try playing it in your DVD player over the television speakers to see what I mean), it still has better presence and detail than 99% of the mass music out there and none of the pop music artifacts - reverb, overdub, etc.

Free Music Review: Misses, just a little...
Hit: 4 Stars

I'm a big fan of Shelby's material, getting hooked by "I Am" and then working my way through her earlier stuff. Now anything she releases is an automatic purchase.

An album dedicated to Dusty Springfield makes a lot of sense. Shelby often inhabits a lot of the same musical territory, and many of her discs ("I Am" especially) elicit Dusty comparisons. There's no question that Ms. Lynne has the feel and the taste to approach this type of material.

So, as might be expected, the results are strong. Shelby's vocals are superb here. Her voice is strong, soulful, sexy and beautifully nuanced with the material. She often evokes Dusty, but always stays within her own style and voice. This lady is a real artist.

My only disappointment is with the arrangements. Much like her previous disc, "Suit Yourself", Shelby has minimal accompaniment here. This allows her voice to be the center of attention, which of course is not a bad thing. But Shelby always works with very talented folks. Thus it's unfortunate that their contributions are minimized. I really think a little more instrumentation could have elevated this disc to classic status. I'm not going to complain too much, though. Shelby Lynne is still an automatic for my money.

I first heard Anyone Who Had a Heart in late December/early January on WFUV in New York. I just caught the last minute or so, but I was listening with headphones and was hooked from the start. I immediately looked it up on Amazon and preordered, and it's been getting frequent rotation on my CD player since it arrived. I wasn't familiar with Ms. Lynne until I read an interview with her in The New York Times, and since then I've discovered I HAD heard of her before (she's featured in the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack for starters). The album backstory is just as interesting as the album--Barry Manilow--BARRY MANILOW!--suggested that the Dusty Springfield catalog would be a great vehicle for Ms. Lynne, and he was absolutely right. The musicians and arrangements are a perfect compliment to Ms. Lynne's song stylings, there's not a bad song on the album. This will be on many a reviewer's end of the year Top 10 albums list. Perfect music for a rainy Saturday night by one's self; even better when shared with someone special. Let me know which song becomes your favorite.
