Free Music Notes for Detours

Free Music Review: Social conservatives need not take note
Hit: 5 Stars

In "Detours," Sheryl Crow probably makes more than a few enemies among listeners who don't like her political views. Like the Dixie Chicks, Ms. Crow basically isn't afraid to call things the way she sees them, a quality which I deeply admire in any artist these days. Some of these songs beg the question, "Where's the outrage?" This CD is filled with beautiful songwriting and lyrics which once again would do even her elder muse Joni Mitchell proud. If you support the current President, think that we went to war over anything other than power over oil reserves, and don't want to hear a voice that dissents, then don't buy this CD (which, by the way, also has other, more personal themes). However, if you enjoyed Ms. Crow's past forays into pop, folk, and poignancy, especially Wildflower, then this one won't leave your CD player or iPod anytime soon. It ranks with her best work.

Free Music Review: Finally, I feel like this really is a Sheryl Crow album!
Hit: 5 Stars

After the last couple of albums I had a lot of hesitation buying Detours. I have to say that I am ever so glad I did. I have been a fan since Tuesday Night Music Club, and this album really puts me back in time to those days. The album has such great sing-a-long songs on it, and is also very well written. There are some that are rather simple, such as Gasoline and Diamond Ring, but even these are lyrically smart and weave their tales in an excellent manner. The best tracks for me are the ones that I can't help but sing along with like Love Is Free, Out of Our Heads, and Motivation. These have a great flow and make you want to tap your fingers on the steering wheel. For me this album is a hit, and I highly recommend it for any fan of mid/late nineties to early/mid 2000s Sheryl.

Free Music Review: Brilliant - and I wasn't even a fan!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to confess I've never really gotten into Sheryl Crow. I never disliked her, I just generally drift towards towards the college radio genre and singer songwriters like Josh Ritter. For some reason a few weeks ago I decided I would listen to the sample of the first song on this album - God Bless This Mess. I downloaded the album moments later. I was really caught off guard and amazed by the incredible quality of this album. The songs are incredibly person and as beautiful as poetry. I've listened to this album non stop for about a week now and I'm still discovering things.

Even if you are an unlikely fan I suggest you give this album a try - you'll like it! Presently, the title track is my favorite!

Free Music Review: Sheryl Crow's best yet
Hit: 5 Stars

Each song resounds with love, humor, truth and inspiration. What's interesting to me about this album is that I hear traces of Crow's musical influences that I've never noticed before. A rhythm guitar piece reminiscent of the Rolling Stones, harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles, etc. Her musical journey on this album is extremely personal, revealing emotion, spirit, her life history, as well as the roots of her musical process. Fascinating, and just good sound, good beat. Good to exercise to, good to keep you company. She so transcends the "girly" girls because she is a whole person--a musician, a poet, a rocker--youthful, energetic, and composed and balanced at the same time. Love her. It will do your heart good.

Free Music Review: It's about time
Hit: 5 Stars

We have been waiting a long time for this new CD from Sheryl, and it was well worth the wait. The music is great but the lyrics are fantastic. Sheryl's lyrics have deeper meaning, are more realistic, and are more thought out than her earlier nonchalant work.

This collection of the frustrations of love and politics is fresh air for a society that seems to be more insane with each passing day. It is good to know that we are not all insane. Sheryl Crow's lyrics speak of philosophies that I can understand and appreciate.

I suspect that the CD will receive poor reviews because of the honest political assessments of our society. But Sheryl has never been afraid to speak the truth.
