Ever since I heard her first hit, All I Wanna Do, I've been a fan of Sheryl Crow. Now, some decade later, she has proven that she has the diversity and staying power to be more than just another top-40 artist with a few hits. I'm not sure what the music critics are saying about her now, but I recall that many initially dismissed her as a mere pop star. The thing about Sheryl is that she is profound in an almost sneaky kind of way. Her lyrics are original and thought-provoking, but her tunes are so catchy that you have to pay attention to notice that she is really saying something in addition to entertaining us. Lines like these, for example, showcase her talent for putting feelings in a simple yet original way:
I'm standing in the middle of the desert
Waiting for my ship to come in
I'm just wondering why I feel so all alone
Why I'm a stranger in my own life
Unlike many other vocalists, who try to impress listeners with their pathos and profundity, Crow never makes the mistake of taking herself too seriously. Listen, however, to songs like Everyday Is A Winding Road or Leaving Las Vegas and, if you pay attention to the lyrics, you may be surprised by the perceptiveness of her vision. In some of her recent songs, she has experimented with country, not, as a rule, my favorite genre. Most of her music, however, has an original sound that does not really fit into a particular genre. Many younger female singer-songwriters today have been compared to Joni Mitchell, one of my favorite singers. While Sheryl Crow has a very different sound than Joni, what I see in common is the poetic quality and light, often whimsical touch that to me is a welcome contrast to much contemporary pop music, which is often either too self-consciously serious or completely mindless. It is impressive when an artist can put out together an album like The Very Best of Sheryl Crow that has so many good songs on it. While I can't say I love every single one, I do like most of them. My favorites are probably All I Wanna Do, Soak Up The Sun, Every Day Is A Winding Road and Leaving Las Vegas. I see Sheryl Crow as someone who will be on the cutting edge of the music scene for a long time.

I'm not really a fan of sheryl crow's but I remember enjoying several of her popular hits over the past 10 years and for that alone getting this CD is worth it cause I would rather own it for the songs I liked which are all on this instead of buying all her albums. Wildflower is a nice CD to own though in addition to her hits.
