Free Music Notes for Wildflower AlbumFree Music Review: A Sober Sheryl Hit: 5 StarsI am re-writing this review -- now that her engagement to Lance Armstrong has gone bust and her recent battle with breast cancer, this album takes on another meaning. "Perfect Lie" is a haunting break up song; "Always on your Side" is a throaty piano ballad destined to become a weepy classic (skip the version with Sting); "Wildflower" is a gorgeous McCartnesque acoustic guitar number with swirling chord changes. "Lifetimes" is fun -- almost a slower "All I Wanna Do."
Even before her recent sad stories, Sheryl, it seems, had grown up a bit, trading her early morning beer buzzes for Terence McKenna quotes, and her sweet sneer for spirituality (albeit a wishy washy one). This album has musical depth and beauty, though the lyrics are often cliched -- whatever happened to the wit of "The Globe Sessions?" "Chances Are" is the best cut a swirling, pensive song full of questions and possibilities. Some klunkers: "Letter to God" -- has spiritual depth of a 5-year-old's "Letter to Santa Claus." "Live it Up" is a boring track that sounds more like a bad Madonna record and "Where has All the Love Gone" -- I guess now that she's broken up with Lance the song carries on another meaning. This album i snot her most adventurous -- or smart. But it does offer some listening pleasure and it just might make you a fan.
