Free Music Review: Reminiscing Garland At Her Very Best

Although Shirley scored her first hit in 1957 with "The Banana Boat Song" this was her break into international stardom. The Fabulous Shirley Bassey is an extraordinary debut, comprised entirely of American standards. Shirley was and still is an incredible vocalist, her voice soars and blends so naturally with these tunes; especially on the hauntingly wonderful "April in Paris" which ranks among the best ever recorded. Shirley's voice was very clear and it sounded nothing like the voice she has today, it was clearer, sweeter and ultimately more seductive. She wraps her voice around these tune with an amazing capability, her rendition of "A Foggy Day" is marvelous, and her conviction in Garland's old classic "The Man That Got Away" is almost equal to Dorothy herself. What's amazing is that Judy actually adored Shirley and often attended her concerts in London. Speaking of Judy, Shirley has definitely been highly influenced by her; the deep vibrator and high pitch, reminiscing Garland at her very best. Today, Shirley is the diva of all divas; you might think of Streisand or Minnelli, but the fact remains that Shirley has been at it a lot longer and has a pedigree the performers could only dream of. When it all comes down to it, The Fabulous Shirley Bassey is my favorite Shirley record. She's young, she's hot and she's unequalled to anyone in this industry. Pick this up and be prepared to be amazed, I guarantee it. Recommended.
