Free Music Notes for Shostakovich: 24 Preludes & Fugues, Op. 87

Free Music Review: Superlative performance which ranks with the best!

Well, I cannot add much to the already 5* reviews of this performance by Jenny Lin of Shosty's 24 Preludes & Fugues - this is my fourth collection of these works (I own Jarrett, Nikolayeva on Regis, & Scherbakov). But, I was utterly surprised by a 2* rating based on one of the 48 tracks on the discs, i.e. Fugue No. 7 in A major; as a result, today I listened to this one work by Jarrett & Nikolayeva, followed by Lin; and yes, the interpretations are indeed different w/ Lin performing in more of a contrapuntal Baroque style - I liked them all! These are just great compositions opened to a variety of different approaches.

Furthermore, in search of a review, I came across one written by David Hurwitz on Classics Today. Hurwitz rates the performance and sound quality a 10/10, while making the statement that this is "the finest version of this massive work yet recorded." He also picks out a handful of works for more specific comments, including the A major Fugue discussed above, stating "The A major fugue, so difficult to phrase cleanly because its simple arpeggio head motive resists contrapuntal elaboration, has all the freshness of a spring day."

Now not all are enamored w/ Hurwitz's reviews - in fact, I'm somewhat amazed at the robustness of his support for Jenny Lin in this and other releases by her. I believe that the bottom line is that Lin's performance and Hanssler's engineering have produce a major contribution to the Shostokovich repertoire that deserves a high rating, hence the reason for my adding a 5* review.
