Free Music Review: Sensitive to a fault, but the sound is a knockout

Yakov Kreizberg isn't a Shostakovich specialist on the order of his far more well known brother, Semyon Bychkov. Both are releasing Shostakovich symphonies in excellent SACD sound -- no doubt a historic first -- but Kreizberg's touch feels too soft to me. He opens the Fifth with hushed reverence when what's needed is tense mysteriousness and anticipation. Here you don't feel that this quietness is leading to anything but itself. The Scherzo gains from the ultra-clear, realistic sonics, but Kreizberg, in his desire to underline every detail, loses momentum.

The Largo is sensitive and beautifully played by the Russian National's string section, but by now one has caught on -- this is areading of moment-to-moment beauties without cumulative effect or an overall sense of purpose. In that regard it resembles the equally ravishing Shostakovich from Vladimir Ashkenazy. Since the opening tempo of the finale remains a point of concern, let it be said that Kreizberg strikes a balance between frenetic speed and overly grand triumphalism. However, the monumental peroration is very slow and overblown. For the listener, this last movement is the best part of the ride, given such exquisite sound quality that throws us right into the middle of the orchestra. Still, The Fifth proceeds from first to last without a great deal of character.

The Ninth is an easy work to bring off, and Kreizberg does well without being distinctive. Again it's the gorgeous, vivid sound that makes the performance. Haitink in his day was given similar sonics by Decca for his version of the Ninth, which has more inner life and character. I don't think a CD can succeed entirely on the basis of a good Ninth and striking sound, but if it can, Kreizberg's does.
