Free Music Review: A spectacular, multi-faceted reading of a 'problem symphony'

Unless the performance is brilliant, concert audiences are baffled by the Shostakovich Fourth, which is so stuffed with themes, rife with incident, and devoid of coherent structure that it defies understanding. There's no easy hook for the listener, only fistfuls of events. In this spectacular recording, Myung-Whun Chung leads a multi-faceted journey through more of Shostakovich's moods than Ormandy, Rattle, or even Gergiev in his excellent recent account on Philips.
This is a perfect strategy, to let the socre unfold cinematically, playing each disjointed episode for all its worth. The Philadelphia Orch. collaborates with Chung in a spirit of excitement and edgy contrast--every hairpin turn is taken for thrills, the shifts into ethereal pianissimo are a breathless hush. I don't think anyone can tame this gargantuan conglomeration, and Chung benefits by not trying to iron it out. All his movements are faster than Gergiev's, giving us an extra degree of excitement. If I were to own only one version of the mighty and enigmatic Fourth, this would be it.
