Free Music Review: Leningrad Symphony-Ghergiev leads his forces to Victory!

I do not want to duplicate the previous reviewer's highly detailedaccount of praise, though I agree with it wholeheartedly.This long awaited live recording from Philips is indeed a stupendous performance,
beautifully paced with gentle quiet sections and earthshattering
climaxes. The dynamic range of this recording will test your
equipment: the famous ostinato in the first movement-the so called invasion theme- goes from barely audible to triple fortissimo in one continuous, sustained crescendo that Ghergiev
commands like a General.What amazed me is how transparent he keeps the orchestral textures, as indeed there is so much variety
to the accompaniment of the repetitions of this banal and even
ugly theme, so he makes the entire progression truly fascinating and it never becomes boring.
The other fantastic part is the fourth movement with the finale coming in all fresh with the brass triumphant (almost like in Bruckner),
again Ghergiev holding the reins to a mind-boggling finale.
I think this disc will win over many previous detractors and sceptics who held grudges to this work for whatever reason.
Ghergiev indeed leads his superb forces to Victory!
