In her final years Tatiana Nikolayeva (1924-1993) achieved a near mythic status in the West. So lauded have been her recordings that it is a wonder, and a considerable cause of regret, that she only came to be appreciated outside Russia and eastern Europe so late in her career. She gave her first concert in London in 1986 and appeared at the Salzburg Festival the following year. Although her repetoire was by no means confined to Bach and Shotakovitch, it is for her interpretation of their music that she is best remembered.
