Free Music Review: An Outstanding Album
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing Sick Puppies live in 2008 I had to go out and buy this album. Starting off with "My World" I realized how much I would like it. The song grabs your attention starting immediately with vocals and guitar. The frustration and anger of the lyrics build up to the chorus. The instruments hit you full volume while Shimon Moore's singing remains repressed until the end of the song. This band definitely keeps you guessing.

Shimon displays a very versatile voice. He effectively uses low register, occasional screaming, and even falsetto in songs like "What Are You Looking For." Perhaps influenced by bands like Muse. This song also reflects the quality songwriting throughout Dressed Up As Life. It has one of my favorite lines: "Another piece of the puzzle that doesn't fit, you throw your arms up your so damn sick of it..." Compared to other modern rock bands, the songwriting in general is a cut above most. This song also takes advantage of some piano playing which fades the song out beautifully.

The music brings to mind bands like Silverchair and Breaking Benjamin. Bassist Emma Anzai is simply amazing. She uses slap and pop to great effect in songs like "Cancer and "Anywhere But Here." The former shows the amazing interplay between her and drummer Mark Goodwin. Before the bridge there's an interlude of slap and pop triplets matched precisely by drum rolls. Sick Puppies are an amazingly tight band. "Anywhere But Here" is just an amazing piece of music entirely. Great singing, incredible slap bass, technical drumming, etc. On another music note, Sick Puppies are definitely not afraid to explore different time signatures. There's the general 4/4 and 6/8 but songs like "Pitiful" and "Howard's Tale" just leave you wondering how the band is still locked into each other.

The album features the song "All The Same" which was a pretty successful song for them. It's one of the more catchy songs on the album and shows off the great production as well. It starts off acoustic then the bass swells and distorted chords bring it into the chorus. But the first chorus doesn't follow the standard "in your face" rock format and remains fairly mellow. This allows you to concentrate on the lyrics not what the instruments are doing. Maybe this is why Sick Puppies haven't quite caught on yet. The music keeps you guessing, it doesn't fit into some cliched mold like most radio bands. I definitely couldn't see a song like "Howard's Tale" being on a popular rock station. This doesn't take away from the fact that like the whole record it's well written and also features an amazing bass line.

The album concludes with "The Bottom." To say this song reminded me of Green Day would almost be an insult to Sick Puppies. The chorus has a punk rhythm and features "hey"s in the Green Day vein. However, the music and structure is beyond any punk band. The main riff alternates between distorted power chords and clean minor picking. It caught my attention immediately. The subject matter is dark yet somehow finishes off the record effectively. The final line, "So welcome home" wraps up this unique album.

It's really hard to find anything to complain about on this album. The lyrics are never cliche, Shimon's singing is soft and angry without going overboard, and the playing and production is impeccable. I would highly recommend this to any rock fan.

Dressed Up As Life Poster

Even if you don't know Sydney, Australia modern rock trio Sick Puppies, you've probably seen their groundbreaking Free Hugs, video, which has garnered more than 11 million views on YouTube.com since it started streaming on the site last year. The heartwarming clip chronicles the true life adventures of a man who walks around holding a billboard that reads Free Hugs," the police who ban his humanitarian crusade, and the petition that earned him back the right to provide hugs to citizens in need. The band's North American debut, Dressed Up As Life, validates the praise with a heartfelt collection of exultant rhythms, propulsive beats and choruses that span miles. It's the kind of record that captures the beauty, pain and endless possibilities of LIFE.
