Free Music Notes for Hvarf/HeimFree Music Review: waiting... Hit: 5 StarsAs some reviewers have noted, this isn't a "mainstream" release, but a worthwhile addition to one's collection while waiting for a follow-up to Takk...
Why 5 stars? A lesser album by Sigur Ros is still better than the best from other bands. (IMO, anyway)
~ More details later, as I get to know the album better. :-)
Free Music Review: under-appreciated acoustic set. Hit: 4 StarsHvarf/Heim isn't meant to be a real album, just a little treat before the band releases a new LP sometime in summer '08. So, of course we can't expect this release to be as epic or groundbreaking as their others, and diehard fans need to go into it knowing that there is really nothing new. Really, this collection is meant to be a little more personal, especially disk 2.
The most under-appreciated part of this two disk set is, in fact, the second disk. It is not very often that anyone gets to hear the band unplugged, and many have grown entirely too accustomed to listening to them with electricity. By removing the electricity, Sigur ros managed to take some of their more epic masterpieces and make them more natural and personal. Let's take for instance Heysatan. While the original on Takk isn't too much different, the live recording strips the band down to the bare minimum and the song becomes almost a lullaby. The rest of the songs follow suit. I was personally surprised how lush their songs stayed unplugged.
The "new" material on the first disk isn't really new at all. All of it has been recorded in the past, with two of the songs being exclusions from previous LP's.
In the end, I can't, in comparison to the band's other works, give this a five star rating. But I can give it 4, and a place in my cd collection.
Free Music Review: magic in a bottle...on a cd Hit: 4 Starssigur ros have found a way to put magic in a bottle...and then put it onto a cd. "hvarf/heim" is the fifth release from the icelandic boys (and girls if you include amiina, their string section). many reviewers have failed to recognise that this double cd is a companion to the dvd release of "heima." this accounts for the lack of new material...it features only three new tracks. the other tracks are reworked or acoustic versions of previously released songs.
fans will not be disappointed, however new listeners may wish to start with one of their "five star" albums, such as "takk" or ().
this band makes (arguably) the most unique and atmospheric music of our time. they are without equal, having a sound and a feel which is completely their own. this record stands as another testament to this fact. buy it...and enjoy.
Free Music Review: The greatness of the CD surpasses any distaste Hit: 5 StarsSigur Ros is so phenomenal that I did not even notice how quickly it was shipped. I was just so elated to get it that it did not matter. Thank you for having it available for purchase.
Free Music Review: Disappointing Hit: 3 StarsAfter the glorious "Takk," I was looking forward to yet another tour de force, but this double-disc is a poor follow-up.
First, the live CD sounds nearly identical to the studio recordings. Usually live CDs are more energetic, powerful, and longer versions of songs. Not so here. If anything, the songs are shorter and more subdued. Also, there's no sounds from the crowd cheering, or introductions of any sort from the band. While the sound quality is good, the experience was a let-down. The live disc is completely pointless if you already own the studio recordings.
Second, the EP contains only 4 unreleased songs, and, while they're good, they're not worth buying the whole set for. Pick them up as MP3s instead.
