Free Music Review: How can you not feel emotionally connected?
Hit: 5 Stars

(FYI, this review is for people who are new to Sigur Ros like me)

I bought this album during Thanksgiving break of last year from Waterloo Records when I was visiting my relatives in Texas. This is my first Sigur Ros album and it certainly won't be my last. Takk... has a very ambient feel throughout, with a very positive but emotional vibe. It's like IDM music, but with less beats and with vocals. Jonsi Birgisson, Georg Holm, Kjartan Sveinsson and Orri Dyrason all work together to create a sound that connects with the listener emotionally and puts all sorts of images in their heads. Lead singer Jonsi doesn't speak any actual real words, but a language that Sigur Ros pretty much made themselves (but the language does resemble the language spoken in Iceland, which is where they're from). But that doesn't matter, because like I said, the soundscapes and atmospheres are what you should focus on. Takk... really is an amazing and ambient album. The band doesn't focus on technical skill, but atmosphere really. Every time I listen to the album I hear something new. There are classical arangements, soft-sounding guitars and bass, lush drum beats that almost sound electronic, and a bunch of sounds from household items like clocks (Saeglopur is a good example of this).

If I had to pick favorites off the CD, I'd say that Saeglopar, Meo Blodnasir, Andvari, and Hoppipolla are the ones that caught my interest the most. But the whole album is more than worth listening to the whole way through.

The band also made a music video for Hoppipolla. It pretty strange - a bunch of old people pretending they're kids again, but the music is what made me want to buy the album.

If you love bands like Radiohead and Pink Floyd, quit reading this, go to your local CD store, and buy Takk... NOW.

Free Music Review: Maybe Sigur Ros's Best yet
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is really amazing. Emotions bleed through every note, and it is not quite as formulaic sounding as their past work. In other words, not every song slowly builds up, reaches a huge climax, and dies down which seems to be the case on () and ?g?tis byrjun. I enjoyed those CDs as well, but it is hard to distinguish between songs. I'm also glad they are back to singing in Icelandic and not "Hopelandic". Really, I understand both to about the same degree, but I like to think I'm subconsciously learning a language when listening to music.

Gong is a particular favorite track on here. If you haven't heard Sigur Ros yet, this is a great album to start.

Free Music Review: Titanic sinks pink.

Sounds like two ocean glaciers grinding and having sex with each other. I like to have sex and listen to Sigur Ros, with those little creepy Icelandic voices swirling as musical notes over our naked bodies. The sexiest album of these modern times.

Free Music Review: A new flavor of Sigur Ros - some will love, some will not
Hit: 4 Stars

This recent effort by Icelandic atmospheric/post-rock band Sigur R?s is a more polished, more studio-produced sounding, more mainstream and pop-infused album than some previous efforts. This can make the songs more melodic and catchy, with hints of accordion/concertina, glockenspiel or toy piano, and electronic pad sounds. This meanders in a slightly different direction than some of the more esoteric, abstract previous works. These songs tend to fit into a "radio format" length and style. Some people will absolutely love this new sound of Sigur R?s; diehard fans of the band's older sounds (more atmospheric, guitar-driven, and experimental) may be fairly put-off and disappointed, however.

If I were to describe the new sound, it sounds to me like some of the riffs and themes from fellow Icelandic band M?m combined with the driving, pulsing rhythms of Texan post-rockers Explosions in the Sky, with the recognizable old-school Sigur Ros vocals woven underneath. Since I am a huge fan of Sigur R?s, M?m, and Explosions in the Sky, to me the new sound is fine and welcome -- in fact I prefer it over some of the more abstract previous works by Sigur Ros. However, if you are looking for the long, sweeping progressive guitar-distorted-ambience sounds of Sigur Ros or if you are more into experimental music ala Radiohead's "Kid A", then I would say this album might not be for you.
