Free Music Review: Takk it away from me
Hit: 1 Stars

When I tried to load this CD into the player, it repeatedly rejected it, and when it finally deigned to play it, appeared to be trying to vomit it out. Hardly surprising, given that this dreary pap is one of the most overrated CDs I have heard in some time. There is really nothing to admire in this painful Enja crossed with a wrench rendition. Avoid at all costs!

Free Music Review: Astonishing
Hit: 4 Stars

When this album first came out my spirits sort of deflated upon hearing it for the first time, but to my grateful surprise it now stands as my favorite Sigur Ros release.

This is basically Sigur's most confident, well-rounded album yet. I always found '?g?tis Byrjun' to be overlong and muddled (but certainly not without its shining moments), and the unique, progressive follow-up to '?g?tis', '( )', was a step forward in album coherency and ambition, but often required more patience than the payoff was really worth. Don't get me wrong, both of the albums are pretty sensational overall -- especially the latter -- but both tended to be heavy in disposition or long-winded, quite often both, and 'Takk' is the first Sigur Ros album that is stellar from start to finish.

Some might not give the band as much credit because it is regressive in the sense that it's not nearly as bold a composition as '( )', but I couldn't be happier with the direction. The melodies are simply more beautiful, more at ease with themselves, and the 'sound' is fuller and more lively; within the first half of the album, especially, 'Takk' is far a pleasingly more optimistic work than either of its brooding siblings. And, despite it not being quite as radical in reach as '( )', it's still complex and layered, often providing unique song structure and a compelling sense of variation in direction. Most of the songs are similar in a handful of ways, but really most of them do differ as far as individual song format is concerned. And, combined with the illuminated tone of most the thing, the result is their most downright enjoyable work yet.

I've always befriended good pop, and those like me should adore this album. It's melodies are, in typical Sigur Ros fashion, simple and almost disconcertingly straightforward, but the dreamy vocals and luscious instrumentation allow pushovers such as myself to dismiss any criticisms that might spring to mind.

I give it four and a half. It's truly, freaking, impossible not to like -- just... sweetly outstanding.

Free Music Review: Don't hear the music.... feel it!
Hit: 5 Stars

Sigur R?s can take you high and make you feel better just by hearing to their "music" (I think the word "music" does not apply, it would be better "heaven sounds" or something).

If you want to relax or just hear a voice saying nothing, but yet beautiful, this is a must have.

Free Music Review: The shimmering sounds of Iceland...
Hit: 5 Stars

...or whatever. Sigur Ros does ambient music (not the techno kind) as well as any band recording now, and this record is a stunning departure from their emo-inspired loud/soft song format from the last album. This one is more even, very melodic and immersive. It's wonderful music to rest to, and I often put it on when I'm studying, as there's veryl ittle here that's jarring or hard on the nerves.

A sensational record, for those that enjoy atmospheric music.

Free Music Review: Mesmerizing: the best album of 2005
Hit: 5 Stars

Sigur Ros is a band that defies description. Their music combines rock guitar, haunting vocals, and ingenuity to create a sound that is otherworldly--not quite rock, not quite easy listening. Try to imagine what superintelligent extra terrestrials would choose to listen to and you might have some idea what Sigur Ros sounds like.

Listen up, earthings: with the release of their lastest album, "Takk" (pronouced "talk," or so I've heard) there has never been a better time to discover Sigur Ros.

Most Sigur Ros fans like think "()" is their best album, but I disagree. "Takk" is much more upbeat and layered than their album "()" and more diverse, to boot. Every single track is overflowing with melody and emotion. "Takk" is therefore my favorite.

Don't be deterred by the length of the songs--art should never be rushed. The thirty second samples they give on Amazon are just not enough to let the music shine.

You probably won't be able to understand the Icelandic lyrics, but you won't miss them. Just listen to the hope in "Glosloli," the conflict in "Saeglopur" or the agony in "Gong." Sigur Ros transends words and communicates straight to the heart.

So open up your mind and try something new. "Takk" is a sure bet.
