as i listened recently to ride's "nowhere" LP, i was reminded of sigur ros and their "agaetis byrjun" album, specifically because both records are mortally wounded by the awful vocals...with ride, the unbearably purple, maudlin lyrics are sung at a level of doe-eyed earnestness only the saddest of sadsack musickers can provide our ears...but still, "nowhere" is largely redeemed by the amazing sonic moments sprinkled throughout it: the title track, 'seagull', the perfectly-timed blizzards of guitar during 'dreams burn down' etc...in fact, "nowhere" could have been the best album mogwai never made had the vocals been removed!on to sigur ros, whose glorious ability with sonic grandiosity is marred horribly by their over-earnest and grating vox...most of the tracks on "agaeits byrjun" soar and rumble, providing splendid peals of sonic beauty unheard since before j. spaceman began "floating in overproduced space" (sadly) after "pure phase"...from the loping piano of the title track to the spellbinding intro (before the song is ruined by falsetto nonsense) to 'Svefn g englar'...the music is Big, Pretty, and Moving, but the we're-angels-of-goodwill-listen-to-our-siren-song-won't-you? vocals are really just plain bad in every new-agey crap way you can imagine (cocteau twins fans, i DO NOT understand you!)...pity, though, because sigur ros could have rivalled any Big N' Pretty noisemakers in the world today...as it stands, i'll stick to my 'lazer guided melodies', 'pygmalion' and 'loveless' discs...
like ride, sigur ros just needed to shut up and play.
