Free Music Notes for Agaetis Byrjun

Free Music Review: brilliant, original, beautiful,...
Hit: 5 Stars

i started to hear an insane amount of hype about this band sometime in early 2001, and just decided to buy "agaetis byrjun" without ever hearing the band. its terrible to say, but at first i didnt take the time to listen to this record, and passed it off after about 5 mins. (with most of the tracks ranging between 6 and 10 mins, it can take a while for things to happen.) i would listen to it as sleeping or background music but really never gave it much thought. one day it just sort of hit me. for being a four peice band using traditional insturments, this group of icelandic men make some of the most unworldly, lush, and beautiful soundscapes ever created. jonsi's heartfelt falsetto rises above and weaves inbetween every note making it one of (if not the most) important instrument. the fact that he sings in icelandic and sometimes in his created launguage "hopelandic" never takes away from the effect his vocals have on you. you dont need to know what he is saying. jonsi and the band can create what theyre trying to get across by their amazing arragements. its hard to explain how incredible this record is. its theme music for any moment in life, film, or almost anything else you need it for. beautiful, happy, or sad. it fits and creates any mood. and for another great sigur ros moment, watch the end scene of Vanilla Sky where a song off their upcoming record, called (), "njosnavelin" is played.

Free Music Review: Simply Beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

I have read every review here, and I have seen many excellent ones, and a few simplistic ones. I will not reiterate anything here. From a technical standpoint, this music is not only profoundly original in its harmonies and instrumentals, it blends the perfection of classical instrumentals with the innovation and vision we find in popular music. If you are tired of yet another band composed of a couple of morons playing the same old chords on the ubiquitous guitar, with the musical knowledge of a first grader.. you will be impressed.

Besides being amazed that a popular music group can create music without the typical rock band composition, this music suceeds in the ultimate goal of all music: It invokes unique emotions that are atypical for any sort of music. Many people have tried to describe what this music makes them think of, or feel.

Whatever this music does do for you, it is radically different than the vast majority of other groups out there. For me, this music is quite serene. While I will compare it in its pure clarity to other scandanavian music, Sibelius comes to mind, I can't describe exactly what this music is all about. I can honestly say that I enjoy the opportunity to coming a little closer to understanding this music every single day. This is not a shot in the dark, quick fix of pop music. Take some time to savor it, and figure out exactly what was put into this fine music.

Free Music Review: I'VE FOUND NEAR PERFECTION
Hit: 5 Stars

Anyone who appreciates beautiful music would love this album. It's not something you listen to when you're drunk in the club, or jamming in your car down the boardwalk on the beach, but its something to listen to and enjoy by yourself. These songs make you think of life, of past relationships, of God, and of the world. The only problem with this is, if you are mainly for lyrics, and you don't speak the language of this band, you will not understand a word, let alone spell a song's name. Do not listen to this album to find meaning in the words. Let the singer's voice and sounds be part of the music instead of focusing on what he is saying. I believe this is an album where you will either REALLY love it or it just won't be for you. If you are strictly into American pop music, hiphop/R&B, metal or hard rock, or close-minded to a certain hardcore sound, this album might not be for you. If you are open-minded to music that isn't just screaming and hardcore riffs, and isn't filled with hot beats with someone yappin about ridin on dubs and 24's, this might catch your ear. This is what music is supposed to be. I'm not saying this is what all music should be. I am saying that all music, whatever genre, should be on this level. If that were possible, the world would be a much more enjoyable place. If you have time to listen to this album, I strongly strongly strongly recommend it.

Free Music Review: Men of words...
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not going to add much to what has already been said about the music of Sigur Rós in previous reviews, only that I have to agree with almost all the other reviewers in that it's like nothing you've heard before.

On the other hand I want to say that I'm sorry so many of you miss out on the excellent lyrics of this album. I've seen in many of these reviews that people believe the lyrics are not important to the overall enjoyment of Sigur Rós' music. That's a gross misunderstanding. If you liked the music the lyrics add yet another dimension. It's difficult to describe, but their lyrics are a simple yet beautiful view on the world closest to us, the everyday life of people like you and me. Being Icelandic I have the privilege of enjoying the lyrics as much as the music and you'll just have to believe me when I say they're just as important.

The only thing that bothers me about Sigur Rós is their decision to sing in "Hopelandic" in concerts outside Iceland. I agree with someone who found that just a tad pretentious. But don't despair, the lyrics on the album are in Icelandic. So all you have to do now is find a course in Icelandic near your home and enroll tomorrow! It's worth it.

Oh, one more thing, please stop comparing Sigur Rós to alien music, how on earth can that be a positive description?

Free Music Review: Why does this album not have a 5 star average?
Hit: 5 Stars

I am at a loss, attempting to understand how any human with ears and emotional capabilities could give this album any less than the full 5 stars. This music is on the very fringe of being able to be described through language... The best I can muster is surreal, ethereal, intricate, awing... This album contains both my first and second favorite songs ("Viğrar vel til loftárása" and "Svefn-g-englar", respectively)... both of these tracks actually moved me to tears.

Upon my first listen of this album, I knew it was something special. But alas, it required numerous listens to REALLY get down to the core of this deep album, as good music should. All I can say is that you must give the album a fair chance, and always listen to it in its entirety. It is not a haphazard collection of individual tracks, clumsily sewn together. While I earlier mentioned particularly adoring 2 tracks, really, this album functions as 1 whole unit, and it begs for your full attention- so turn off your shuffle and truly dedicate yourself to appreciating and lavishing this masterpiece.

This album is a profound adventure through a breathtaking soundscape. Do yourself a favor and get this album. If not.. just know that there will be a gaping void festering in your life until you do. This album is a necessity.
