Free Music Notes for Agaetis ByrjunFree Music Review: Stunningly beautiful and atmospheric Hit: 5 Stars
The moment I heard the stirring, haunting melodies to "Staralfur", I was captivated by almost immediately. This was one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a long time. Of course I had to check out the rest of "Agaetis Byrjun". 76 minutes long but 76 minutes is probably the proper length for this group's gorgeous epic songs. 3-4 minutes wouldn't do any of the songs on this album justice. The grandeur of Sigur Ros' music is simply breathtaking. Another favorite song of mine off the cd "Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa" literally made my heart stop when I first heard its gorgeous melodies. It gets a bit noisy at the end of the song with the orchestral strings but nowhere loud as say Wagner's music gets. I must admit that a few songs of the band's like "Olsen Olsen" reminds me a bit of Radiohead and I'm sure there are people who won't appreciate that comparison but better Radiohead than Matchbox Twenty. I really could not help but hear the Radiohead comparisons, especially in "Olsen Olsen" which could have easily been found on "OK Computer". The song itself is simply beautiful and incredible. Sigur Ros has churned out an album that would make for an excellent film score I think. It has the key elements of emotions and grandeur required for a film score.
Free Music Review: Iceland...blah blah blah......Hopelandic...blah blah blah... Hit: 5 Stars
You don't need a biography of the band to enjoy them. Visit their website (http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk) and check out videos of them playing. Watch the finale of Vanilla Sky and hear some of their newer music playing behind and really carrying the scene. The music is without a doubt amazing enough to carry it without someone trying to imagine the mountains of Iceland as the music plays or whatever b.s. scene they want to pull up. I'll tell you as a music listener I know next to nothing of Iceland and I don't have trouble relating. I don't need to picture a vast landscape to enjoy. As an atheist, I can't relate to some spiritual journey through music. As a fan of music, I can absolutely say this music is beautiful often, moving so much of the time, and always engaging. It's a pleasure to break free of traditional pop music and get into a song that can last 10 minutes without ever losing your interest. I honestly can say I listen to this CD, and it just flies by. I lose track of time, I find myself closing my eyes and really focusing in on the music, and I keep coming back to it again and again. But as I said, you can't completely take my word for it. Listen for yourself. 30 second clips just won't do. You'll have to go elsewhere to really get to know Sigur Ros.
Free Music Review: Wonderful stuff - they know what they are doing Hit: 5 Stars
This is the soundtrack to the dream you only have once in your life: a free-floating shamanic fantasy in which you swim underground through icy tunnels and emerge as another human being on the other side of reality. The frosty, melancholy tunes are just drenched with a brittle, liquid electricity and velvetine moodiness that would make even the Lushest, most Radioheaded, Ultra Vivified Scene, or <innovatively engineered band name here> sound like hallmark cardboard. The lyricism, melody, and episodic quality is more high art than rock and roll, but there is a naturalness that is anything but pretentious. The integrity of the band and of their work is strong enough to sustain and even endear the listener to the strangeness and allow the dark, crystalline emotion to come through despite the language barrier. Sigur Ros is admirable in their (thus far) insistence on never singing in any other language than Icelandic. I've heard that among their up-and-coming projects is recording an old Icelandic farmer reciting verse - will it be with our without the arctic blast of guitars? Anyhow, I found the album outstanding - not the best ever made, but certainly good enough for your average tunnel swimming seal-incarnation trip, next time you book one.
Free Music Review: Thanks Sigur Ros Hit: 5 Stars
Thanks Sigur Ros. First and foremost, thanks for ripping out my heart and soul and then serving it back to me as a musical masterpiece. You've created a breathtaking hour of beauty that makes me giddy with joy. Thanks for completely flooring me with tracks three and four and thanks for the concussion resulting there from. Also thanks for charging me thousands of dollars for your music. Sure, it was only fifteen bucks at best buy, but it made my whole CD collection obsolete. Radiohead no longer has the emotional intensity, Weezer now sounds like a bunch of kids playing with guitars, and Coldplay sounds shallow and poppy in comparison. Thanks for transforming my case full of good music into a case full of expensive coasters. Thanks for making indescribable music that makes me sound ridiculous when I attempt to explain its beauty. How can I tell my friends about some weird Icelandic band and make them understand? And finally, thanks for leading me to a dead-end. Where are my musical tastes to lead me now? How can I ever go back to what I once loved? How will I ever find anything like this ever again? In all liklihood, I won't. And that's what I'm afraid of. So thanks again, Sigur ros. Thanks.
Free Music Review: You know our vocabulary is insufficient Hit: 5 Stars
Today was the first day in my life that I have read a negative review of Sigur Ros, and I hope it is the last as well. How could you give ( ) a negative review? What could be changed to make it better? I can tell you this...not a thing. Indeed, precious Jonsi opted to speak in words(?) none understand, yet what is the voice but another instrument while accompanied by music? I respect the fact that Sigur Ros realize that actual lyrics only serve as a nudge to push people in the direction the artists want their interpretation to go (this does not work in all genres, however [eg emo, punk, all other lamo genres]). This album shows how when you think something is perfect, it can surprise you by becoming even better. I had Agaetis Byrjun and Von before I was given ( ), and I thought that Agaetis Byrjun was it, that music had reached it best and the summit of its potential was found. However, I was proven wrong, and hallelujah. I recommend ( ) for most people, but I know some people think the music Sigur Ros play odd. Different tastes. But, for most who appreciate music as something to entertain and provoke, I highly recommend this album.
