Free Music Review: Truly progressive.
Hit: 5 Stars

The reviewer below who gave this one star doesn't know what he's talking about. This is tied with Blackwater Park by Opeth as THE most progressive CD of 2001. Sigur Ros have created a style of their own that nobody can copy. It doesn't sound like Enya. It doesn't sound like Bjork. The most accurate description I've heard of what it sounds like is "God crying his head off in Heaven." Every second of this masterpiece is sad yet beautiful, blasting Kid A (although a fine album) out of the water. The vocalist/guitarist and bassist are especially great, adding the most emotional force to the music. Yet another great thing about this is studio musicians that actually sound like part of the band. The horns on "Ny Batteri," the violins on "Straatlfur," and especailly the flute solo on "Olsen Olsen" sound like someone in the band picked up one of those instruments and started playing. Such is the harmony of this opus.

If you like powerful, emotional music, do not hesitate to pick this up. If you like Celtic music that isn't "repetative," then listen to Enya and traumatize yourself in the process.

Free Music Review: Music Graced By Angels.....
Hit: 5 Stars

That is one definition that comes to mind whenever I am listening to this remarkable cd. I have been a fan of a movement in music called shoegazer that was popular in the early 80's/90's that introduced some amazing bands with heavenly, ethereal music (think Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, Lush, etc). While Sigur Ros' music could be described as fitting into that category, they are in turns doing something completely original in the same instance. This band breathes life into ambient, heavenly music...it is comforting, uplifting, dense, atmospheric, and mysterious, all in the same instance. I will agree with much of the praise here in the other reviews; it is music that will move and inspire you like few others can. I am so happy to have discovered this fabulous band, and more anxious still with the arrival of their new album (October 2002). I can't recommend this cd enough; it stays with you long after each listen, and you will want to play it again and again. This is proof that there are still those few rare artists out there who know how to mix true beauty with originality. I, for one, hope they will be around for a looong time!! :-)

Free Music Review: Music that exists for its own sake
Hit: 5 Stars

Don't try to break it down. Don't try to analyze it, or even think about it. Sigur Rós certainly doesn't.

This album is full of gorgeous music without a message. It has no political musings, it has no outward cries to anyone or anything. All it is is music that exists to be listened to. Not listened to with a fiery heart, or a keen mind, or anything else that could scrutinize or misconstrue, but just listened to.

To all those that say it's "pretentious", you're obviously bitter about your own musical shortcomings and have fallen prey to the evil beast of pseudointellectualism, wearing its traditional thick, black rimmed glasses, anti-culture t-shirt, worn jeans and Carhartt jacket. Shut up. You know nothing of what you speak. You can't enjoy it with tunnel vision and a closed mind.

It's not rock, it's not ambient, it's not classical, and trying to find "influences" or saying "it sounds similar to Radiohead" will just not do it justice. This is not Radiohead. This is Sigur Rós, and it is truly beautiful music for people who wish to listen to it and have their own experience.

Free Music Review: Brilliant, groundbreaking music...
Hit: 5 Stars

When I saw Vanilla Sky for the first time, "Svefn G Englar" actually didn't stand out to much....probably because the movie was so surreal and dreamy, much like the music of Sigur Ros.

One day at school, i decided to download some music off the vanilla sky soundtrack, and this was the only one I ended up getting. I couldn't stop listening to it. Every little nuance in the music just blends together 100%. It feels like your in a dream, a fantasy almost...everything just seems so wonderful and beautiful, but you cant help feeling down because it seems to good to be true, to good to be real. To the reviewer below me...yes, they are from Iceland, but I believe they actually created their own language for their songs. Words you've never heard before and probablly will never hear again.

Its probably some of the most beautiful music my ears have ever heard, and I am a musician serious about knowing my art as much as humanly possible. No need to do write-ups for each track here...they are all wonderful. My favorite is still "Svefn..", though.

Do yourself a favor and buy one of the best albums of the new millenium.

Free Music Review: This album made me weep.
Hit: 5 Stars

I first got a whiff of Sigur Ros when they played on Conan O'Brien, after the release of Takk..., and I thought they were amazing. I've always been a fan of strange music, and when thought to be up ther with the likes of Bjork, I just had to give them a listen.

I picked up Takk and ?g?tis Byrjun, and promptly listened to them. As I was listening to the latter album, a funny thing happened. About six minutes into Svefn-G-Englar, I felt sick. Tears came to my eyes, and I began to cry. Now, this isn't a natural thing for me, so you can understand why I'd be blown away. Something about the sound made me break down. It probably came from the fact that it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. I don't mean that like some people say it, I mean that I have NEVER heard anything that sounds anything like it.

It's been awhile since I picked the album up, and I still listen to it at least once every other day. It's something that never gets old, because it's, as said, nothing I've heard before. In short, this album should be in the CD collection of everyone who has an opinion on music, and what makes it beautiful.
